LA JOLLA, CA — Scripps Research has once again achieved the highest-possible rating from Charity Navigator, the nation's largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities and nonprofits. Based on a qualitative review of dozens of performance metrics valued by charitable givers, Scripps Research was awarded an “exceptional” rating of four stars, indicating it exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its cause.

Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of a four-star rating.

“This unbiased recognition from Charity Navigator acknowledges our dedication to financial stewardship, which is something we take very seriously,” says Jennifer Crosby, vice president of Philanthropy and Community Engagement for Scripps Research. “We appreciate every dollar of support we receive from our donors and our community, and this rating shows they can expect the best from us in return.”

Financial gifts to Scripps Research enable scientific discoveries that advance human health. Among the many FDA-approved drugs to result from donor-funded work at Scripps Research are treatments for cancers, arthritis, heart conditions and respiratory distress syndrome. Dozens of additional drug candidates—targeting pain, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, dementia, malaria and many other disease areas—are currently in development.

In addition to its reliance on philanthropic gifts and funding from the National Institutes of Health, Scripps Research has established a first-of-its-kind translational research model for funding nonprofit research institutes. Through industry partnerships and licensing agreements, the institute is advancing new drug candidates and bringing yet another valuable layer of financial sustainability to fuel its mission.

“Being a four-star charity means that when we receive gifts, we put them to the best and most efficient use and that we are accountable for our results,” Crosby says. “We believe our unique operating model will make Scripps Research an even more appealing option for donors who want to shape the future of health.”

Charity Navigator’s professional analysts have examined tens of thousands of nonprofit financial documents to develop an unbiased, objective, numbers-based rating system to assess over 9,000 of America's charities. The ratings help donors gauge how efficiently a charity will use their support, how well it has sustained its programs and services over time, and its level of commitment to accountability and transparency.

“Scripps Research’s exceptional four-star rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public,” says Michael Thatcher, president and CEO of Charity Navigator. “This adds Scripps Research to a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges.”

Scripps Research is an independent, nonprofit biomedical institute ranked the most influential in the world for its impact on innovation. With campuses in La Jolla, California, and Jupiter, Florida, the institute is advancing human health through profound discoveries that address pressing medical concerns around the globe.
