Cores

The cores and services at Scripps Research provide access to knowledgeable and experienced staff, customizable services and world-class instrumentation. These services and capabilities provide a competitive advantage to every research group on campus. Many instruments are available for open access use after researchers undergo core personnel-provided training. Most of the core facilities are also available to external users.

Jason Chen

Jason Chen, PhD

Executive Director of Core Facilities

Jason Chen, Executive Director of Core Facilities, oversees the Scripps Research cores and services. Chen did his graduate and postdoctoral training at Scripps Research. He returned to the institute in 2016 and has been in his current role since 2023.

Animal Models Core

The Animal Models Core provides in vivo tests relevant to human diseases and the development of medications and other treatment strategies. In addition to general test batteries, the core offers panels for disorders of learning and memory, affective states, social behaviors, motor functioning, pain and sensation, sleep, metabolism, and drug and alcohol abuse and dependence. Core services include customized design and implementation of tests, including surgical procedures, drug administration protocols, and tissue collection, as well as training in all these areas.

Amanda Roberts, PhD Senior Scientific Director

Automated Synthesis Facility

The Automated Synthesis Facility accelerates discovery through data-rich, high-throughput experimentation, combining expertise in organic chemistry with advanced analytical and preparative chromatography and mass spectrometry. We design, execute, and deliver actionable insights that accelerate projects at every stage of the research process.

Brandon Orzolek, PhD Director

Biophysics & Biochemistry Core

The Biophysics & Biochemistry Core offers access to state-of-the-art instrumentation for characterizing protein, nucleic acid, and small molecule structures and their interactions. We support researchers by studying spectroscopic and biophysical traits of molecules, identifying structures and interactions that are essential to the drug discovery process, and elucidating biological mechanisms. We also train researchers to design and perform the experiments.
