Friedbert Weiss elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science

LA JOLLA, CA – Friedbert Weiss, PhD, a professor of neuroscience at Scripps Research, has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Election as an AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon its members by their peers.
Weiss’s research focuses on the neurobiological basis of abnormal behavioral and brain functions relevant to human psychopathology with emphasis on the neural control of motivation and reinforcement.
The majority of this work is directed at the understanding of the neuropharmacological, neurocircuitry, and molecular basis of drug and alcohol addiction, including mechanisms that lead to the development of dependence and withdrawal states, drug craving and relapse, as well as impairment in memory and cognitive function.
Weiss joins 416 AAAS members being awarded this honor for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. New fellows will be presented with a certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin on February 16, 2019 at the AAAS Fellows Forum during the 2019 AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.
