Academic Preparation & Educational Outreach Programs
Since 1989 the mission of The Scripps Research Institute's multi-faceted Academic Preparation and Outreach Programs has been to use the intellectual and material resources at Scripps Research to recruit and train the next generation of scientists. Our programs promote science education and awareness throughout San Diego County by raising high school students' awareness of career opportunities in the biomedical and chemical sciences, providing middle and high school teachers with cutting-edge professional development, and fostering an understanding in the general public of the basic ties that exist between biomedical research and human health.
As part of this mission, Scripps Research is committed to increasing the participation of female, underrepresented minority, and first-generation college-bound students in the biomedical and chemical sciences. Currently, women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities comprise more than two thirds of the U.S. workforce, but hold only one quarter of the science and technology jobs vital to our economy.* Our programs recruit high achieving students from all backgrounds from throughout San Diego County. We receive many outstanding applications and are only able to accept about one in four of the most qualified students for internships.
The Scripps Research Academic Preparation and Educational Outreach programs are made possible by educational grant funding and the generosity of private foundations and contributors.

While the bulk of The Scripps Research Institute's funding is derived
from the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies, specialized
grants and private philanthropy must be secured to fund institutional priorities
such as the Education Outreach Programs.
When the internship program was established in 1989 for students from local
high schools, a small number of positions were funded through the National Institutes
of Health Minority High School Apprenticeship program. TSRI later received grant
funding from the Minority Initiative: K12 Teachers and High School Students.
As the outreach programs expanded and grew in popularity, the Institute has sought
and received funding from private foundations, non-profit organizations and individual
philanthropists.
Endowment funding for the outreach programs includes gifts from:
- John and Susan Diekman
- Ralph and Shirley Shapiro
- The William Randolph Hearst Foundation
- The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations
Additional support has been provided over the years by:
- The Samuel H. and Katherine W. French Fund and the Maurice J. Masserini Charitable
Trust, both administered by Wells Fargo Bank
- The San Diego Workforce Partnership, in conjuction with the Neighborhood
House Association
- The Joseph Drown Foundation
- The Carl E. Wynn Foundation
- The Paul Glenn Foundation
- The California Wellness Foundation
- Bank of America, San Diego and Bank of America, Palm Beach County
- The San Diego Foundation in conjuction with the Blasker-Rose-Miah Fund
- Biogen Idec Foundation
In addition, private contributions have been received from the following philanthropists:
- Robert Wallace
- George and Patsy Conrades
- The McCarthy Family
- Oliver and Norma James
