Director, Community Engagement, Scripps Research Translational Institute; Corporate Vice President, Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute

Athena Philis-Tsimikas is the corporate vice president of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute at Scripps Health and the director of community engagement for the Clinical Translational Science Award, housed at the Scripps Research Translational Institute. She previously served as a clinical endocrinologist at the Scripps Clinic Medical Group in the Division of Diabetes and Endocrinology and also served as an associate clinical professor at the University of California, San Diego. In 1997, she assisted in establishing the community-wide, nationally recognized diabetes program Project Dulce as its medical director. Philis-Tsimikas received her medical degree from the University of Athens Medical School in Athens, Greece, and later completed dual research and clinical fellowships in diabetes and endocrinology at the University of California, San Diego, and at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the subspecialty of Diabetes and Endocrinology. Philis-Tsimikas has served as the principal investigator in numerous clinical research trials, both sponsor- and investigator-initiated. She has dedicated her career to furthering diabetes care, research and education.
