About Scripps Research

We live in extraordinary times. Rapid advances in science and technology have transformed understanding of human biology and disease, presenting an unprecedented opportunity for helping people live healthier lives. At Scripps Research, we believe that scientific institutes need to evolve to take full advantage of this historic moment. That conviction drove us to pursue a first-of-its-kind, nonprofit research model that not only generates new scientific insights, but also ensures they lead to better ways to diagnose, prevent and treat disease.

Bold Ideas. Transformative Discoveries.

Founded 100 years ago in La Jolla, California, Scripps Research is globally renowned in both the life sciences and chemistry—and for pioneering discoveries at their intersection.

Our Secret?

We empower exceptional investigators to push the frontiers of science, to take risks and to pursue their boldest ideas. In an environment defined by scientific freedom, minimal bureaucracy and deep cross-disciplinary collaboration, our scientists have made truly transformative discoveries. These include major breakthroughs in understanding human health and disease, as well as next-generation technologies that are transforming modern science and medicine.

Translating Insight into Impact

The scientific breakthroughs emerging from Scripps Research hold tremendous potential to impact human health. To maximize the benefit to patients, we have established a unique research model that incorporates the expertise, infrastructure and partnerships needed to turn laboratory breakthroughs into life-changing medical advances.

Our two applied research divisions, Calibr-Skaggs Institute for Innovative Medicines and Scripps Research Translational Institute, work side-by-side with investigators in our six academic departments to translate scientific discoveries into powerful new applications, diagnostics and medicines.

A Self-Sustaining Model for Bold Science

Breakthrough science requires both freedom and staying power. At Scripps Research, we’ve built a success-based flywheel model that allows our most ambitious discoveries to move forward—and, in turn, help sustain the science that made them possible.

By advancing promising discoveries toward new medicines and partnering them for further development, we generate resources that are reinvested directly into research and education.

Alongside vital federal funding and philanthropic support, this model strengthens our ability to pursue high-risk, high-reward science, weather shifts in the funding landscape, and continue delivering outsized impact for human health.
