Laura Nicholson, MD, PhD

Research Focus
Laura is first and foremost an educator and mentor. Her career has been built around training the next generation of clinician-scientists, from leading residency research programs and evidence-based medicine curricula, to guiding physician and graduate scholars through master's-level work in Clinical and Translational Investigation. She has been recognized repeatedly with student and resident teaching awards across Scripps, UCSD, and Stanford, which speaks to the quality and impact of her mentorship.
Her research focus sits at the intersection of education and translational science: specifically, how to instill and advance evidence-based practice principles among active clinicians and trainees. Within the CTSA scholars program, she connects graduate and post-doctoral trainees to clinical research collaborators and supports them in applying genomic and bioinformatic tools to real clinical studies. For an intern, working with Laura would mean structured guidance, a mentor deeply invested in trainee development, and exposure to how rigorous research methodology is taught and applied in a clinical setting.
