Distinguished Alumni Award

Nominees must be alumni who earned a degree or completed significant training at Scripps Research (graduate, postdoctoral or equivalent). Nominations may be submitted by alumni, faculty, staff or any member of the Scripps Research community. Anonymous nominations and self-nominations are not accepted.

Nominations not selected in a given cycle are automatically held as active candidates for the following two cycles, without requiring a new submission.

Professional Distinction & Achievement

National or international recognition for research, leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship or public service. Evidence includes major honors and awards, influential publications or patents, significant leadership roles or measurable improvements in health outcomes

Innovation & Influence

Breakthroughs, paradigm-shifting discoveries, transformative technologies or creation of impactful companies, programs or policies. Sustained influence on a scientific field, industry or discipline.

Leadership & Vision

Leadership that advances science, inspires others, strengthens institutions or enhances the reputation and visibility of Scripps Research. Includes interdisciplinary collaboration, mentorship at scale or shaping the direction of a field or organization.

Service, Engagement & Values

Meaningful engagement with the Scripps Research community through mentoring, alumni leadership, collaboration, advocacy, philanthropy or community-building. Demonstrated commitment to scientific integrity, equitable excellence and improving human health. Evidence may include career choices, public advocacy, mentorship history or institutional contributions.

An Awards Committee drawn from the Alumni Homecoming Committee and/or Alumni Board will independently score all nominees using the rubric above. Scores will be averaged and discussed in a facilitated committee session. The committee will recommend finalists to Scripps Research leadership (including the President and Dean of the Graduate Program) for final approval. The selection process is confidential.
