Peter Vogt Receives Outstanding Investigator Award

Peter Vogt, professor in the Department of Molecular and Experimental Medicine at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), is among the first class of National Cancer Institute Outstanding Investigator Award recipients.

The seven-year award, designed to allow funded investigators to take greater risks, supports accomplished leaders in cancer research who are providing significant contributions toward understanding cancer and developing breakthrough applications in biomedical, behavioral or clinical cancer research.

Vogt was cited for his work on molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis and its potential to impact the translation of basic knowledge into clinical medicine. For additional information on Vogt’s research, visit his faculty webpage and lab website.


David Millar to Speak at April 13 CA Faculty Lecture Series

David Millar, professor in the Department of Integrative Structural and Computational Biology, is the next featured speaker in the Scripps California Faculty Lecture Series. Millar will present his talk, “Visualizing Protein Action, One Molecule at a Time,” on Wednesday, April 13. The lecture will begin at 5 PM in the Timken Amphitheater, Green Hospital. A reception will follow in the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Building, first floor.

Bicoastal Career Workshop: Structuring Research Papers

A bicoastal workshop, “Structuring Your Research Paper,” will be held Monday, April 11, from 12:30 to 2:30 PM Pacific time, on the Scripps California campus and broadcast live, from 3:30 to 5:30 PM Eastern time, on the Florida campus.

Conducted by internationally known author and speaker Jean-luc Doumont, the session will cover how to structure research papers, dissertations and other reports to attract readers’ attention and facilitate navigation through the material.

Designed for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, the workshop is scheduled in the Beckman building’s Keck amphitheater in California and room B158 in Florida. Reservations are required.


IBP Program to Visit Janssen R&D Facility

Registration closes Monday, March 28, at 5 PM for the next Industry Bridge Program (IBP) event, a visit to Johnson and Johnson’s Janssen R&D facility in La Jolla, scheduled for Wednesday, April 6, from 8 AM to 3 PM.

Sponsored by the Scripps California Society of Fellows (SoF), the IBP provides TSRI postdoctoral fellows and graduate students opportunities to learn about industry careers, obtain industry exposure, interact with industry scientists and learn how to effectively transition to industry.

Twenty-five participants will be accepted for the Janssen visit on a first-come, first-served basis. Eligibility, specific application procedures and guidelines can be found on the IBP webpage. Preference will be given to first-time applicants; only fully completed applications will be considered. Cancellation within 72 hours of the event will count as attending and will affect future IBP participation. Reservations can be made on the SoF website.


FL Wellness Workshop: Building Resilience

The next Scripps Florida Wellness Workshop, “The Road to Resilience: Adapting to Stress and Adversity,” will be held Thursday, March 31, noon to 1 PM, in room C212.

The workshop will be presented by Dana Scoville of TSRI’s Counseling and Psychological Services department. Describing “resilience” as the ability to recover quickly from change, hardship or misfortune, Scoville says the quality allows individuals to develop new skills and perspectives that lead to continued success.

The workshop will cover resilience assessment, situations that require resilience and strategies to strengthen resilience. Reservations are requested to dscovill@scripps.edu.


CA & FL Biosafety Meetings Scheduled

To receive consideration at the next Scripps California Institutional Biosafety Committee, registration documents must be submitted to Environmental Health and Safety by Friday, April 1, via email to rachellv@scripps.edu. The meeting will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2:30 to 3:30 PM, Building 3301, P2 conference room.

The next meeting of the Scripps Florida Institutional Biosafety Committee will be held on Tuesday, April 5, from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, in the Building B Founders room. RSVP required to Galina Judge, gjudge@scripps.edu.


CA ScrippsAssists Supports Humane Society Walk for Animals

ScrippsAssists invites TSRI faculty, staff, families and friends (16 years of age and older) to volunteer for the San Diego Humane Society’s (SDHS) 2016 Walk for Animals/San Diego to be held Saturday, May 7, from 7:30 to 11:30 AM, at NTC Park, Liberty Station in Point Loma.

The volunteer signup deadline is Friday, April 1. TSRI volunteers will set up and staff water stations along the walk route, fill dog water bowls and cheer on walkers. All volunteers will receive complimentary T-shirts (to wear at the event), pancake breakfast and snacks. Scouts or students can earn community service hours; students can bring their service forms for signature or request a letter from ScrippsAssists.

Event proceeds will help fund the society’s animal shelter and rescue activities, pet ownership classes, community educational programs and animal cruelty and neglect prevention efforts.

CA Onsite Clinic: March 30

The next onsite immunization clinic on the California campus will be held Wednesday, March 30, from 9:30 to 11 AM, in the Hazen Theory building, rooms 203/205. Appointments are not needed.

Conducted by Sharp Rees-Stealy staff, the clinic will provide hepatitis B vaccination free of charge to all TSRI employees. Environmental Health & Safety Occupational Medicine must pre-authorize all other procedures based on the employee's working conditions. These procedures include tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccines and other titers, immunizations and procedures.


At the Auditorium: Chamber Music

Mainly Mozart’s Spotlight Series presents a chamber music program on Saturday, April 2, at 6 PM, featuring violinist Daniel Phillips, violist Cynthia Phelps, cellist Ronald Thomas and flutist Tara Helen O’Connor. The quartet will perform Mozart’s Flute Quartet No. 3 in C Major, DeBussy’s Syrinx, Francois Devienne’s Duo for Flute and Viola in C minor, Op. 5 and Beethoven’s String Trio in G Major, Op. 9. Ticket and additional program information is available on the Mainly Mozart website.

The San Diego Symphony’s Chamber Music Series concert on Sunday, April 3, at 7:30 PM, will feature internationally known violinist Midori, in her debut performance with the symphony. With symphony orchestra musicians, Midori will perform various works for solo violin by Bach as well as Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14 in C# Minor, Op. 131. Ticket information can be found on the symphony’ website.
