Ashok Deniz to Speak at June 12 Faculty Lecture Series

Ashok Deniz, associate professor in The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) Department of Integrative Structural and Computational Biology, is the featured speaker at the next Faculty Lecture Series presentation, Wednesday, June 12. His topic is “Single-Molecule Biophysics of Intrinsic Protein Disorder.” The lecture will begin at 5 PM in the Timkin Amphitheater in the Green Hospital, La Jolla, California. Academic Careers Roundtable: Teaching Biology at Community College

Community college teaching careers is the topic of the next Academic Careers Roundtable scheduled for Thursday, May 30, noon to 1 PM, in the graduate office conference room, Building 3377, on the California campus.

Sponsored by the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office, the roundtable will feature Anita Hettena, biology department co-chair and associate professor of biology at San Diego City College. Hettena holds a PhD from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

The bimonthly roundtable series presents a variety of topics and faculty discussion leaders in an informal conversational format with students and postdoctoral fellows. Lunch will be served; reservations are required.


New English-as-a-Second-Language Series to Begin

A new English-as-a-second-language class series will begin Tuesday, May 21. The class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 PM every Tuesday in the Immunology Building West Conference Room. The price for three months (12 classes) is $60. Each intermediate-level English class is divided into speaking and listening, idioms and vocabulary, and reading and writing. Instructor Cassandra Wadkins uses movies, games, television shows, grammar books, songs, drawing and novels to teach standard American English. Have fun and learn English at the same time! ScrippsAssists Sponsors Blood Drive May 23

A California ScrippsAssists-sponsored blood drive will be held Thursday, May 23, 9 AM to 2:30 PM at the San Diego Blood Bank (SDBB) bloodmobile, located in the parking lot in front of the Molecular Biology/Skaggs building, 10596 N. Torrey Pines Road. Donors will help supply the nearly 400 units of blood distributed daily to San Diego hospitals.

Donor guidelines and eligibility requirements are posted on the SBDD website. Eligible donors are encouraged to make an appointment through the SBDD website. Walk-ins are accepted.

Blood drive participants will be entered automatically in a raffle for prizes, according to Leslie Madden, ScrippsAssists project coordinator. For additional information, contact Madden at lmadden@scripps.edu.


NWiS Stages KidWare Resale Event

Gently used infant and child gear at affordable prices and a chance to meet other TSRI parents will be featured at the KidWare Resale, scheduled for Saturday, June 1, 9 AM to noon, in the Immunology Building breezeway on the California campus.

Sponsored by the Network for Women in Science (NWiS), the event is open to the public and free to both buyers and sellers. TSRI parents who want to sell their children’s outgrown baby/toddler clothes, strollers, playpens, toys, etc. may bring their own tables or NWiS will provide tables for $15. Each seller will be charged a $10 refundable reservation fee. Table space must be reserved by Friday, May 24.

Non-TSRI employees may sign up for a space if they are sponsored by a TSRI employee who also attends event. For table reservations and additional details, contact Research Associate Elena Menichelli, elenam@scripps.edu.


CA ScrippsAssists Seeks Volunteers to Support Food Bank

ScrippsAssists is recruiting volunteers to help staff the upcoming “Foodtasia” fundraising gala supporting The Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank (SDFB). The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 8, at the SDFB warehouse, 9850 Distribution Avenue, San Diego.

At least 15 volunteers are needed for either of two work shifts—noon to 8 PM or 4 PM to midnight—for such tasks as set up/tear down, guest check-in/out, Bid-Pal instructors, food serving and bar backing.

The largest hunger-relief organization in San Diego County, the SDFB last year distributed 17.9 million pounds of food and served, on average, nearly 350,000 people per month. CA Onsite Clinics Scheduled for June 10 and 12

The next California campus onsite immunization clinic will be held on Monday, June 10 and Wednesday, June 12 , from 9:30 to 11:30 AM in Building 3366, room 240. Conducted by Sharp Rees-Stealy staff, the clinics provide hepatitis B vaccination free of charge to all TSRI employees. Appointments are not needed.

Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Occupational Medicine must pre-authorize all other procedures based on the employee's working conditions. These procedures include: tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) vaccines; the one-visit Quantiferon tuberculosis test (see the Center for Disease Control TB Fact Sheet); and other titers, immunizations and procedures.

After EH&S pre-authorization, individuals who cannot attend the onsite clinic may visit the Sharp Rees-Stealy occupational medicine clinic by calling (858) 526-6150. CA Biosafety Committee June Meeting Materials Due

The TSRI Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, June 12, in the Faculty Club Tennis Court Room. To receive committee consideration, registration documents must be submitted to Environmental Health and Safety via email to rachellv@scripps.edu by Friday, May 31.
