CA Campus Recycling Efforts Top 1 Million Pounds

The California campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) is growing greener. In its second full year of implementation, the single-stream recycling program surpassed 1 million pounds of collections, including cardboard, plastics, glass, aluminum/metals and paper—enough to fill nearly one entire floor of the campus’s Beckman building, from floor to ceiling.

“The success of the 2012 single-stream recycling program is even more remarkable when you consider just three years ago, in 2010, the campus recycled a measly 210,162 pounds of waste materials,” said Pete Herold, vice president of facility services and CA Green Team chair. “Now there’s more than 1 million pounds we don’t have to pay to haul to the landfill.”

Herold extended his thanks to the faculty and staff who have embraced the program, the Student Sustainability Initiative, which helped launch single-stream recycling and encouraged participation, and Larry DeGreif and the Environmental Services staff, who helped implement the program.

Last year’s precise recycled materials total was 1,031,374 pounds, said Ramon Juarez, environmental services quality assurance and training coordinator and the single-stream recycling program supervisor. Recycling in the Immunization and Microbial Science Building and the Molecular and Experimental Medicine building contributed significantly to the upsurge.

The campus-wide effort eliminates sorting recyclables by type and allows users to discard all recycled material in blue bins located in most labs and offices. For further information on single-stream recycling and other Green Team initiatives, visit the group’s website.

Annual CA Symposium Offers Lab Management Training

Junior faculty members and postdoctoral fellows at TSRI are invited to attend the sixth annual Academic Leadership Symposium, a two-day course in how to lead innovative and productive research programs. The symposium is scheduled for Friday, February 22, and Saturday 23, from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

Hosted by the Torrey Pines Training Consortium, a collaboration of TSRI, the Salk Institute for Biomedical Studies, Sanford–Burnham Medical Research Institute and the University of California, San Diego, the symposium will be held at the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine Auditorium, 2880 Torrey Pines Scenic Drive, La Jolla.

The symposium, based on the scientific management training course developed by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund/Howard Hughes Medical Institute, will address:

  • Building and sustaining an effective team
  • Managing communication and conflict in the lab
  • Developing a leadership style
  • Managing time
  • Setting up a lab
  • Navigating tenure
  • Marketing science

The $100 course fee includes a flash drive of course materials and breakfast, snacks and lunch. For TSRI participants, the symposium fee is eligible for the Society of Fellows postdoc course reimbursement program.

The course is limited to 130 participants and has sold out each year. Registration details and further information are available on the symposium website.

Career and Postdoctoral Services Offers Tour of Local Biotech

TSRI’s Career and Postdoctoral Services Office is sponsoring a tour of local biotech company Fabrus, offering a look at the industry side of science on Wednesday, January 30, 1 to 3 PM.

James Graziano, Fabrus COO and 2006 TSRI alumnus, will conduct the tour of the company’s lab and offices. Fabrus operations are focused on developing a next-generation antibody discovery platform to expand therapeutic antibody applications. Specifically, tour visitors will view HT Flow Cytometry instrumentation that allows screening of antibodies against targets on live cells and learn about 2-D barcoding that enables sample tracking throughout the process and the automated scale-up production of the antibody library.

Fabrus is located at 11099 North Torrey Pines Road, Suite 230, La Jolla, 92037. Underground parking is available. Visitors are asked to wear laboratory-appropriate attire, including closed-toed shoes, pants, etc., and arrive no later than 12:45 PM. Reservations are required and can be made on the Career and Postdoc Services website.
