Scripps Florida Toastmasters Club Celebrates First Anniversary

For just over a year, Scientifically Speaking—the Scripps Florida Toastmasters Club—has helped campus members conquer the knee-shaking, voice-quavering, and stomach-churning fear often experienced in public speaking. The group also recently received confirmation of its official status as a “bona fide” Toastmasters International club, according to Sheri Resnick, human resources analyst and the club’s president.

“Whether speaking in front of their labs, delivering poster presentations, participating in job interviews, functioning in teaching environments, facilitating proposals to investors for potential businesses, or presenting scientific talks to enlighten others, scientists will inevitably speak publicly throughout their careers,” Resnick said. “Club members can expect to learn confidence when speaking publicly, how to conduct and participate in business meetings, and how to become strong leaders.”

Scientifically Speaking club members include graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, lab assistants, human resources staff, and other campus employees. In addition to Resnick, other club officers are:

  • VP education – Stephanie Canny, research technician in TRI informatics
  • VP membership – Vanessa Saunders, research associate in Discover Biology
  • Treasurer – Rosie Albarran-Zeckler, graduate student in the Smith lab
  • VP publicity – Sathish Srinivasan, research associate in the Nettles lab
  • Sergeant-at-arms – Wendy Bakeman, research assistant in the Valente lab
  • Secretary – Heather Rust, graduate student in the Thompson lab.

Research Associate Yun Yung, president of the 12-year old Scripps Outstanding Speakers (SOS) Toastmasters club on the California campus, expressed his support for the Florida group. “On behalf of the Scripps Outstanding Speakers Toastmasters club in California, I warmly congratulate our counterpart club at Scripps Florida, which has achieved official club status within the Toastmasters International family,” he said. “Toastmasters is dedicated to improving the speaking, leadership, and mentorship skills of members at lively meetings to promote personal and career development.”

Toastmasters weekly meetings typically showcase two prepared speeches and three to four impromptu talks. With peer evaluations and support, members learn to organize their thoughts, and deliver concise, well-thought-out presentations. Members also have the opportunity to participate in local Toastmasters contests and training sessions.

Toastmasters International provides a guide that outlines topics and objectives for each speech project. “One must meet the objectives set out for the project,” Resnick explained. The objectives include introductions, organization, content, body language, vocal variety, research, visual aids, and persuasion.

”It is a learn-by -doing model of learning,” Resnick explained. “Additionally, individuals who utilize English as their second language can benefit by practicing and ultimately gain confidence.

Further details about SOS Toastmasters at Scripps California are available at the group’s website. A website for the Florida group will be available soon.

2012 Grantsmanship and Funding Fest Now Offered

This year’s Grantsmanship and Funding Fest will offer a series of workshops and events during June. The festival, presented by the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Office of Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholar Affairs, is designed to provide postdoctoral fellows and early career researchers insight into grant writing applications and the review process.

Scientific Skills Series

This three-phase workshop on scientific communication and proposal writing is aimed at helping predoctoral or postdoctoral fellowship applicants build clear and effective scientific proposal writing skills.

Phase I, a three-session lecture and workshop series, will be held Mondays, June 4, 11, and 18, from 10 to 11:30 AM, in the Committee Lecture Hall at the Skaggs Institute/Molecular Biology Building. The series’ Phase II is designed as an independent writing period, while Phase III will include planning and review panels, offering peer critiques of submitted proposals in a mock study section format.

Michael Matrone, program coordinator, Career & Postdoctoral Services Office, will host the series, which will feature as guest lecturer Scripps Research Professor M.G. Finn.

According to Matrone, the series proposes to help participants:

  • Design and write the scientific sections of a scientific proposal
  • Fairly and critically evaluate peers’ proposals
  • Understand the fellowship and grant review process
  • Develop and improve reading, writing, and critical-thinking skills

Attendees will also learn about targeting a fellowship to specific agencies, specific fellowship application sections, and best practices in fellowship and grant writing

Registration is required to attend the series. Registered participants must commit to the entire series.

The Basics of Science Grant Writing

UCSD Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Bioengineering Peter Wagner will present this workshop, scheduled for Tuesday, June 5, noon to 2 PM at the UCSD School of Medicine Telemedicine Building, lower auditorium. Wagner will cover the importance of preparation, introduce the proposal elements (abstract, specific aims, significance, design, and method, etc.), explain what and how to address each section, and share his experience as a grant submitter and reviewer.

Fellowship Funding Opportunities

A panel of representatives from four health-related nonprofit agencies will present their organization’s predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowship opportunities Monday, June 11, 3 to 5 PM, in the Committee Lecture Hall at the Skaggs Institute/Molecular Biology Building. The agencies include California’s Tobacco Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP) and HIV/AIDS Research Program (CHRP), the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society. The event will offer a question-and-answer session.

For additional details on the Grantsmanship and Funding Fest, contact Matrone at x4-9391 or Ryan Wheeler, manager of Career and Postdoctoral Services Offices, x4-9740. For other career resources, visit department’s webpage.

MEM Building Captures Recycling Award
award
The 258 occupants of the Molecular and Experimental Medicine (MEM) building bested the competition in the Green Team’s 2012 Single-Stream Recycling Challenge, recycling 17,202 pounds of material—66.6 pounds per person—in the annual contest. "Our colleagues housed in the MEM building are doing their part to recycle, a small but important component in minimizing waste and the impact of our footprint on the environment,” said Jeff Kelly, chair of the Department of Molecular and Experimental Medicine (left), shown here accepting the Keith McKeown Memorial Green Feat Award from Ramon Juarez, environmental services training coordinator.
