Meet the Alumni: Chris Yohn of Sapphire Energy

Chris Yohn, associate director of trait discovery at Sapphire Energy and a 1997 alumnus of the Kellogg School, will share his career experiences at the upcoming Meet the Alumni presentation, on Tuesday, May 15, from 4 to 5 PM, in the Faculty Club Library Room.

A former member of the Mayfield lab, Yohn joined Sapphire Energy in 2008 and currently works in green crude research. He leads the company’s bioinformatics efforts, using advanced genomics technologies to help identify and improve algal strains for commercial production. Additionally, he directs Sapphire’s collaboration with Monsanto, in which genes influencing yield and stress resistance are discovered for use in both crop plants and algae. Yohn completed postdoctoral training at New York University Medical Center.

Sponsored by the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office and the Network for Women in Science, the Meet the Alumni series features a casual setting and discussion format, covering such topics as career influences, transitions, and options. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is required.

Onsite Immunization Clinic May 14 and 16

The next California campus onsite immunization clinics will be held Monday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 16 from 9:30 to 11:30 AM in Room 325 of the 3366 Building.

Conducted by Sharp Rees-Stealy staff, the clinics provide hepatitis B vaccination free of charge to all Scripps Research employees. Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Occupational Medicine must pre-authorize all other procedures based on the employee's working conditions. These procedures include:

  • Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) vaccines
  • A new one-visit Quantiferon tuberculosis test. (For information on this test, read the Centers for Disease Control TB Fact Sheet.)
  • Other tests, including titers, immunizations, and procedures according to the Scripps Research employee job function.

Individuals who cannot attend the onsite clinic may visit the Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Center in Mira Mesa or Kearny Mesa after EH&S pre-authorization. In addition, appointments can be scheduled at the Sharp Rees-Stealy Occupational Medicine Office by calling (858) 653-6150.
