Keary Engle Receives National Green Chemistry Award

Keary Engle, a member of the Yu lab and a Skaggs Oxford scholar with the Kellogg School of Science and Technology at The Scripps Research Institute, is one of two recipients of the 2012 Kenneth G. Hancock Memorial Award, a national recognition for outstanding student contributions to furthering the goals of green chemistry.

The award, sponsored by the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Division of Environmental Chemistry and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, is named after the late director of the National Science Foundation’s Division of Chemistry, an early advocate of chemistry’s contributions to solving environmental problems.

The ACS judges cited Engle’s research on “Ligand-Accelerated Catalysis in Palladium(II)-Mediated C–H Functionalization.” The award will be presented June 18 at the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards Ceremony, held at U.S. Environmental Protection Agency headquarters in Washington, D.C.
