Lisa Stowers to Speak at March 14 Faculty Lecture

Scripps Research Institute Associate Professor Lisa Stowers is the next speaker in the Faculty Lecture Series, scheduled for Wednesday, March 14, at 5 PM in the Timken Amphitheater at Green Hospital, California campus. Her lecture is entitled "Identification of Specialized Odors that Generate Innate Behavior." Following the lecture, a reception will be held in the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Building, first floor. Career Workshop Series: Career Adventures Beyond the Bench

Four panelists will be featured in "Career Adventures Beyond the Bench," a Career Workshop Series presentation, scheduled for Tuesday, March 20, 1:30 to 3 PM in Keck Amphitheater on the Beckman Building, on Scripps California campus. Sponsored by the Society of Fellows and the Scripps Research Career and Postdoctoral Services Office, the workshop will be streamed live at 4:30 PM EST to room B158 on the Scripps Florida campus.

Workshop panelists will represent several areas of non-bench science careers, including patent law and intellectual property, public policy and public health, medical communications, venture capital, business development, and corporate strategy. They will share practical advice related to their own career transitions, covering descriptions of their current jobs, opportunities in the field, training opportunities, and additional career resources. A question-and-answer session and networking reception will follow the short presentations.

Panel members include:

  • James E. Butler, vice president, legal affairs and intellectual property, Sapphire Energy, Inc.
  • Morris Jones, chief of viral immunoserology and molecular diagnostics, California Department of Public Health
  • Ramlah Nehring, medical communications liaison, advocacy and education, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
  • Angie You, CBO, Aragon Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Prior to the panel presentation, from noon to 1:30 PM, lunch and an informal roundtable discussion with panelist Morris Jones will be held in Beckman Building room 405. Required lunch reservations may be made on the Career and Postdoctoral Services training webpage.

Lunch & Learn: ‘Golden Rules’ of Parenting

The challenges of raising children are the focus of the next Lunch & Learn workshop, “Keeping It Simple: A Few ‘Golden Rules’ of Parenting,” to be presented on Wednesday, March 21, noon, in the Keck Amphitheater on the California campus.

Sponsored by the Office of Counseling and Psychological Services and presented by counseling center director Daphne Lurie, the workshop will cover basic themes central to effective parenting, particularly of young children.

“Expectant parents, new parents, and parents simply wanting to brush up on their skills are all welcome to attend,” said Lurie.

Specifically, the presentation will offer:

  • A framework to organize one’s parenting efforts
  • Tips for interacting effectively and meaningfully with one’s children
  • The opportunity to interact with other parents

Junior faculty and postdoctoral fellows from the Torrey Pines mesa attended the recent San Diego Lab Management Symposium, sponsored by Scripps Research, Sanford-Burnham, Salk, and UC San Diego March 2 and 3. Symposium sessions covered successful leadership skills, lab logistics and planning, team management, tenure, and mentoring.
