CA Campus SOF Joins Hirsute Effort to Support Prostrate Cancer Awareness

“Grow a moustache; support men’s health” encourages the California campus Society of Fellows (SOF) as the group kicks off its annual “Movember” fundraising event to support prostate cancer research and increase awareness of the disease the Prostate Cancer Foundation says is the second-leading cause of cancer death in men

SOF invites supporters to join the “ScrippsMachismo” team in the worldwide “Movember” organization’s 30-day moustache-growing challenge. Starting Tuesday, November 1, with cleanly shaven faces, participants will solicit donations from sponsors, friends, and fans throughout the month. A “before” (pre-moustache) group photo will be taken at 1 PM, Tuesday, November 1, in the Beckman atrium.

Women are also encouraged to participate as “Mo Sisters,” said SOF team organizer, Karsten Baumgaertel, research associate in the Mayford lab. The team also plans other activities throughout November.

All funds raised by ScrippsMachismo will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LIVESTRONG). The Scripps Machismo team, organized in 2006 by the late postdoctoral student Jared Purton, raised $3,800 in donations in last year’s event.

“What many people don't know is that one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime,  and that testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged 18-35,” noted Baumgaertel.

For further details, contact Baumgaertel. To register, visit the team’s Movember website.
