Snapshot: Sherri Briggs

Position: Research Associate in the laboratory of Courtney Miller on the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI).

Research: Briggs is working to uncover the unique mechanisms that underlie how the brain stores memories associated with substance abuse. Her goal is to one day develop forms of pharmacotherapy to help people with drug addiction overcome memories that can trigger relapses.

Background: Briggs grew up in Bakersfield, CA, and Atlanta, GA. She received her bachelor’s degree from Fort Valley State University and her doctorate from The University of Georgia.

Arrived at TSRI: March 2014

Thoughts on TSRI: “The atmosphere here at Scripps is very collaborative. I have found that this kind of environment is conducive to the growth of scientists, as well as helping to make the science that we do here at Scripps great!”

Professional and Volunteer Groups: Briggs has worked with the Society of Research Fellows as Vendor Show Chair and currently serves as Vice President.

Other Extracurricular Activities: Outside the lab, Briggs likes to spend her time working with her church to feed the homeless, run a tutoring program, work with youth in various capacities and host a young women’s support group.
