Snapshot: Tamara Ho

Position: Staff psychologist in The Scripps Research Institute’s (TSRI) office of Counseling and Psychological Services, California campus.

Responsibilities: Providing counseling and consultation on such concerns as depression, loss and grief, stress and anxiety and relationship issues. Ho’s experience includes working with clients from diverse backgrounds and cultures. She also facilitates support groups and presents Lunch & Learn wellness workshops.

Background: Born in Southern California’s Ventura County, Ho earned a BA in psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles and a PhD in Counseling Psychology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she received the R. Wray Strowig Award, for excellence in practice and commitment to the aims of counseling psychology. Her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Michigan and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Southern California both focused on mental health in higher education settings. Most recently, Ho served as a staff psychologist at the University of San Diego.

Thoughts on TSRI: "The clients I have worked with here have been bright, hard-working and motivated to make important changes in their lives."

Professional and Volunteer Groups: While previously involved with the American Psychological Association and Asian American Psychological Association, her current volunteering centers on her eight-year-old daughter’s activities, serving as classroom helper, Girl Scout leader and softball dugout mom.

Extracurricular Activities: Married to a professor at San Diego State University, Ho enjoys riding her beach cruiser and watching her daughter play doubleheaders. She also collects pottery from the 1940s and 1950s and ocean-tumbled sea glass, appreciating that something once considered worthless is now valued as rare and beautiful.
