Pathway to Independence Awards Winners

Luis Natividad, Ph. D. and Florence Varodayan, Ph.D., research associates in the Roberto lab, have both won National Institutes of Health K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Awards. This prestigious award supports outstanding postdoctoral researchers as they transition to independent scientists.

Natividad is a graduate from the University of Texas at El Paso. His research employs neurobehavioral methods towards the understanding of dysregulated circuits in the brain that give rise to hallmark pathologies of alcoholism, such as impaired cognition. Natividad began this research with the late Dr. Larry Parsons, and now aims to integrate a proteomics-level analysis of the medial prefrontal cortex to assist in identifying novel mechanisms of alcohol-induced cognitive dysfunction. This work will be done under the guidance of Dr. John Yates in Molecular Medicine, and Drs. Friedbert Weiss and Marisa Roberto in the Department of Neuroscience.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University, Dr. Varodayan’s research focuses on how neural communication between addiction-related brain regions, such as the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, is shaped by alcohol dependence. Her work has the potential to uncover critical neuroadaptations that drive the development of alcohol use disorders, with the aim of advancing their prevention and treatment. During this award period, Dr. Varodayan will be co-mentored by Drs. Marisa Roberto, Friedbert Weiss and Amanda Roberts (all Department of Neuroscience).
