CA ScrippsAssists Celebrates 1,800 Hours of Service in 2013

Recording an estimated 1,800 hours of service for charitable causes that benefit cancer patients, hungry and homeless populations, clean environments and families at risk, ScrippsAssists recently celebrated its 2013 San Diego service year and lauded two retiring committee members.

At the ScrippsAssists annual luncheon, Mishelle McClanahan-Shinn, chair of the TSRI employee volunteer group, highlighted the many contributions of recently retired members Jan Hill and Marcia McRae. Hill helped establish the service organization in 1993; McRae coordinated many projects with ScrippsAssists community partner Home Start and chaired the annual Craft Fair fundraiser.

ScrippsAssists 2013 accomplishments include:

  • Raising $1,840 in flower sales for the final American Cancer Society “Daffodil Days” campaign, bringing the TSRI total contributions to more than $40,600 since 1998.
  • Providing monthly lunch service for a total of 3,600 homeless men, women and children at St. Vincent de Paul Village.
  • “Adopting” 17 families and holding a successful toy drive for Home Start holiday programs; contributing 32 filled back-to-school backpacks for children of Home Start families; helping Home Start staff with special events, which raised more than $170,000 for programs to help prevent child abuse and domestic violence.
  • Sorting and/or packaging 478,760 pounds of food for distribution through the San Diego Food Bank; volunteering at the food bank’s special events, helping raise more than $141,000 for the anti-hunger agency.
  • Collecting two carloads of supplies and $450 in donations for holiday veterans support drive with Standing Tall Together.
  • Helping to raise more than $300,000 for the San Diego Humane Society at its annual “Fur Ball.”
  • Conducting monthly trail maintenance and lagoon restoration in the 2,000-acre Torrey Pines State Reserve.
  • Collecting 10 pounds of debris at Lake Hodges for the I Love a Clean San Diego project.
  • Raising $1,785 in pie sales to fund 456 meals for homebound and critically ill San Diego residents through the Mama’s Pie in the Sky project.
  • Donating 128 pints of critically needed blood to the San Diego Blood Bank from quarterly campus blood drives, earning the blood bank’s Partner for Life award.
  • Recycling more than 20,000 wine bottle corks through the Whole Foods Cork Reharvest Program.
  • Raising more than $1,850 at the annual TSRI Craft Fair and Raffle to support local charities.
  • Contributing thousands of recycled magazines for distribution to local cancer treatment facilities.
