CA Campus Annual Golf Tourney 'Tees Off' in July

Serious golfers and hackers take note: the June 30 registration deadline is fast approaching for the 17th Annual Scripps California Golf Tournament, scheduled for Thursday, July 26, from 12:30 to 8 PM at The Vineyard in Escondido.

The $60-per-person tournament fee includes green fees, warm-up/driving range balls, BBQ dinner, and “swag,” according to event organizer Todd Maxwell, safety officer with Environment Health and Safety. “Raffle prizes will include golf-related paraphernalia, including various golf clubs, balls, golf bags, free rounds of golf, and other golf gadgets,” he explained. Non-golf prizes will also be offered.

First, second, third, and last-place prizes may be “a little different this year,” hinted Maxwell. “Long-drive champions and closest to the pin shots will walk away laden with gifts,” he added.

The typically less-than-staid tournament once again will honor a former friend and colleague with the Jared Purton Memorial Spirit Awards. “This year, the spirit awards will go to those who best represent Jared’s homeland of Australia. If you can play a whole round of golf in a kangaroo costume, you have a good chance of winning,” said Maxwell.

Thirty-six four-person teams will play in the scramble-format tournament. Team slots are available on a first-paid, first-play basis and are open to family or friends, but must include at least two Scripps Research employees. Individual team indices/handicaps must total at least 40. Less-than-full foursomes and single players may be matched to complete a team.

Team application forms are available at http://intranet.scripps.edu/california/sports/golf_flyer.pdf. For additional details, contact Maxwell at (858) 784-9566 or toddmax@scripps.edu.
