Hollis Cline to Speak on ‘Training our Brain Cells’ at ResearcHERs Public Lecture October 26

Hollis Cline, Hahn Professor of Neuroscience and chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), will discuss her work in brain research at the next ResearcHERs lecture, “Training our Brains Cells to Grow and Thrive,” on Wednesday, October 26, from 4 to 6 PM.

The ResearcHERS public lecture series, sponsored by the Women Scientists of TSRI, is designed to give TSRI friends and donors a behind-the-scenes look at biomedical research and the work of women in the field.

SRF Distinguished Lecture Series to Present Pfizer’s Hovik Gukasyan

The Scripps Florida Society of Research Fellows (SRF) Distinguished Lecture Series will present Hovik Gukasyan, senior principal scientist, drug product design, for Pfizer Worldwide Research & Development, speaking on “Pharmaceutical Science and Technology: From Theory to Practice.” The lecture will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 4 PM, in room B158.

A PhD graduate of the University of Southern California, Hovik’s research focuses on the development, characterization and application of novel drug carrier systems (nanotechnology, targeting and controlled delivery devices) for cancer treatment. He supports drug discovery and repositioning projects through pre-clinical pharmacokinetic, safety and efficacy experiments.

Bicoastal Workshop: Manuscripts – An Editor’s Perspective

TSRI Professor Ian Wilson will provide an editor’s perspective on manuscript writing, submittal and presentation at a bicoastal career workshop scheduled for Tuesday, October 18, from 1:30 to 2:30 PM on the Scripps California campus and 4:30 to 5:30 PM on the Florida Campus.

Wilson, Hansen Professor of Structural Biology and chair of the Department of Integrative Structural and Computational Biology, will discuss editor preferences and the elements of manuscript preparation, including effective writing and titles, abstracts, background sections, tables and cover letters.

Sponsored by TSRI’s Career and Postdoctoral Services Office, the workshop will be held in the Committee Lecture Hall in California and broadcast live to classroom B158 in Florida. Reservations are requested.


CA NWiS to Discuss Implicit, Explicit Bias

Strategies to address implicit and explicit bias, particularly in the academic field, is the discussion topic at the next Scripps California Network for Women in Science (NWiS) Coffee Hour, scheduled for Tuesday, October 18, at 4 PM.

To prepare for the discussion, attendees are asked to read two recent Science magazine articles: “Recommendation letters reflect gender bias” and “The complex role of gender in faculty hiring.”

Open to the entire California campus, the event will be held in the Graduate Office dining room, first floor, Hazen building.

SoF Executive Committee Elections November 3

The Scripps California Society of Fellows (SoF) will hold elections for the 2016-2017 executive committee officers at the group’s monthly meeting on Thursday, November 3.

SoF is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization designed to encourage both professional and social exchange within TSRI and with postdoctoral fellows from other academic institutions in the San Diego area. The group supports a series of academic events, including a visiting lectureship program and an annual Research Symposium.

In addition, SoF offers career development programs, including course and conference travel reimbursement, training and skills enhancement workshops in association with the TSRI Career and Postdoctoral Services Office and the Industry Bridge Program, which provides an opportunity for postdocs and graduate students to visit and network with San Diego’s many biotech and pharmaceutical companies. The group also maintains a communications and institute information exchange program with current and former postdoctoral fellows.

SoF social events include monthly happy hours, cross-institute parties and group activities. Most events are open to the entire Scripps California campus; to receive event announcements, subscribe to both postdocs@scripps.edu and the FYI@scripps.edu mailing lists.

SoF general meetings are held the first Thursday of each month, from 1 to 2 PM, in the Graduate Office dining room, first floor, Hazen building. Lunch is provided. ScrippsAssists Holds Final Blood Drive of 2016

ScrippsAssists encourages all eligible California campus faculty, students and staff to sign up for its final blood donation drive of 2016 with the San Diego Blood Bank (SDBB) on Thursday, October 20, from 9 AM to 2:30 PM.

The SDBB provides blood components and services to local and regional hospitals and is the primary provider for Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego. People with life-threatening medical conditions, including cancer and other blood disorders, severe burns, organ transplants, emergency surgery, trauma, childbirth complications and more, depend on volunteer blood donations.

Volunteers are asked to schedule appointments on the SDBB website. For information on blood donor requirements, visit the website’s donor page.

The bloodmobile will be located in the parking lot in front of the Skaggs/Molecular Biology building, 10596 N. Torrey Pines Road. All donors are automatically entered for special raffle prizes.

CA Onsite Clinic November 2

The next onsite immunization clinic on the California campus will be held Wednesday, November 2, from 9:30 to 11 AM, in the Hazen Theory building, rooms 203/205. Appointments are not needed.

Conducted by Sharp Rees-Stealy staff, the clinic will provide hepatitis B vaccination free of charge to all TSRI employees. Environmental Health & Safety Occupational Medicine must pre-authorize all other procedures based on the employee's working conditions. These procedures include tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccines and other titers, immunizations and procedures.


CA Biosafety Committee Meeting Materials Due October 28

To receive consideration at the next TSRI Institutional Biosafety Committee, registration documents must be submitted to Environmental Health and Safety by Friday, October 28, via email to rachellv@scripps.edu. The meeting will be held Wednesday, November 9, 2:30 to 3:30 PM, in the P2 conference room, building 3301.


FL Biosafety Meeting Scheduled for October 20

The next meeting of the Scripps Florida Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) will be held on Thursday, October 20, from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, in room B393. RSVP required to Galina Judge, gjudge@scripps.edu.

The La Jolla Music Society Discovery Series presents award-winning clarinetist Raphaël Sévère on Sunday, October 30, 3 PM.
