Disney Lab ALS Study Selected for Best of Neuron

A study led by Matthew Disney, professor at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), and Professor Leonard Petrucelli of the Mayo Clinic has been included in Best of Neuron, 2014-2015, a collection of the readers’ and editors’ favorites celebrating the research published in the journal Neuron

The study, "Discovery of a Biomarker and Lead Small Molecules to Target r(GGGGCC)-Associated Defects in c9FTD/ALS," described a therapeutic strategy targeting a specific genetic mutation that causes a common form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s disease), as well a type of frontotemporal dementia.

Michael Farzan to Speak at February 10 CA Faculty Lecture Series

Michael Farzan, vice chairman and professor of the Department of Immunology and Microbial Science at Scripps Florida, will speak on “An Alternative Approach to an HIV Vaccine” at the next Scripps California Faculty Lecture Series presentation on Wednesday, February 10. The lecture will begin at 5 PM in the Timkin Amphitheater, Green Hospital. A reception will follow in the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Building, first floor.

FL Career Workshop: Building a Strong LinkedIn Profile

Drop-in appointments for help in building a strong LinkedIn profile are available for Scripps Florida postdoctoral fellows and graduate students on Tuesday, February 16, from 3 to 5 PM. Briana Konnick, program coordinator for TSRI Career and Postdoctoral Services, will conduct individual 10- to 15-minute profile reviews and feedback in room B393. Reservations are required.


CA ScrippsAssists Blood Drive February 4

Eligible donors in Scripps California community are encouraged to participate in the ScrippsAssists blood drive scheduled for Thursday, February 4, from 9 AM to 2:30 PM, in partnership with the San Diego Blood Bank (SDBB).

Appointments may be made on the SDBB website; walk-ins are also welcomed. Eligibility guidelines and requirements are listed on the blood bank website. Donors should bring photo identification, a record of medications they currently take and a list of locations visited outside the United States in the past three years.

The SDBB bloodmobile will be located in the parking lot adjacent to the Skaggs/MBB building, 10596 N. Torrey Pines Road. All donors will automatically be entered into a prize raffle. For further information on the blood drive, contact project coordinator Leslie Madden at lmadden@scripps.edu.

At the Auditorium: Award-Winning Violinist Ning Feng

The La Jolla Music Society’s Discovery Series presents Chinese violinist Ning Feng, a first-prize winner at the International Paganini Competition, on Sunday, February 21, 3 PM. Feng will perform works by Mozart, Beethoven, Falla and Korngold, as well as Waxman’s Carmen Fantasie. Visit the society’s website for additional program and ticket information.
