Career Workshops: Fellowship Opportunities

Upcoming workshops on the California and Florida campuses will provide information on graduate student and postdoctoral fellowship opportunities available from non-National Institutes of Health agencies and organizations. The workshops will also cover granting writing and the grant review process.

The workshop on the California campus, scheduled for Wednesday, June 4, from 1 to 2:30 PM, in the Beckman building’s Keck Amphitheater, will feature guest speakers from Susan G. Komen, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and American Heart Association. Snacks will be provided. The Florida campus workshop, to be held Thursday, June 12, from 1 to 3 PM in classroom B159, will present representatives from the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, the American Heart Association and the U.S. Department of Defense. Registration is required.


Lunch & Learn: The Body–Mind Connection

The benefits of physical activity for general health and emotional well-being will be explored at the Lunch & Learn presentation scheduled for Thursday, May 29, noon to 1 PM, in the Beckman building’s Keck Amphitheater.

Local psychologist and former TSRI staff psychologist Jeff Jones will conduct the session, “Examining the Mind-Body Connection,” focusing on the merits of consistent exercise, common obstacles to starting an exercise routine and specific plans to begin a personalized exercise regimen.

The Lunch & Learn series is arranged by the TSRI Counseling and Psychological Services Office. Additional information on the series and other office resources is available on the department’s website.


CA Campus Blood Donor Service Recruits Participants

To meet increasing demand, the TSRI Normal Blood Donor Service (NBDS) is recruiting an expanded pool of paid donors. The NBDS provides normal human blood for investigators as a core service for the institute.

Donors are immediately compensated with a minimum of $25 and a maximum of $100 for a single draw, depending on the quantity of blood needed. To qualify, donors must:

  • Be between 21 and 65 years of age.
  • Weigh at least 110 pounds (50kg).
  • Have blood pressure between 90-180 mm Hg systolic and 50-100 mm Hg diastolic.
  • Not have undergone major surgery within the past six months.
  • Score adequately on recent hemoglobin testing.
  • Screen negative for HIV and hepatitis B and C upon entry into the program and every subsequent year.
  • Not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory medication on a daily basis.

Open Monday to Friday, 6 AM to 2:30 PM, the NBDS donor center is located at 11025 Torrey Pines Science Park South. CA ScrippsAssists Activities: ElderHelp 5K and Humane Society Walk

TSRI faculty, staff and students are invited to help with the first ElderHelp 5K Fun Run/One-Mile Family Walk on Saturday, June 7, from 7 to 10 AM. The race aims to raise awareness and support for ElderHelp, an organization that provides programs and services to San Diego senior citizens to help them live independently in their own homes.

The event will be held at RoadRunner Sports, 5553 Copley Drive, San Diego, 92111. Volunteers will help staff check-in tables, course hydration stations, course monitoring and finish-line hydration and refreshment distribution.

More than a dozen ScrippsAssists volunteers participated in the San Diego Humane Society’s recent Walk for Animals at Liberty Station in San Diego, helping with raffle activities. The event raised more than $400,000 for the society’s animal rescue, care, education and pet therapy programs. ScrippsAssists volunteers included Eric, Rhiannon and Katalina Chappel; Arryn Craney and husband Addae Jones; Helen Gilmore; Tanya Gresham; Suzette Hunter; Mishelle Mcclanahan-Shinn and husband Tim Shinn; Peter Thuy-Boun; Jocelyn Wang; and Kevin Xin.

Onsite Clinic Scheduled for June 11 on CA Campus

The next onsite immunization clinic on the California campus will be held Wednesday, June 11, from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, in building 3366, room 150. Appointments are not needed.

Conducted by Sharp Rees-Stealy staff, the clinic will provide hepatitis B vaccination free of charge to all TSRI employees. Environmental Health & Safety Occupational Medicine must pre-authorize all other procedures based on the employee's working conditions. These procedures include tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) vaccines and other titers, immunizations and procedures.

TB testing is provided for employees who, in the scope of their TSRI positions, provide human health care, such as registered nurses, or who work with human subjects. For further details, contact Rachel Longville, rachellv@scripps.edu or at x4-8457.


CA Biosafety Committee Meeting Materials Due May 30

The TSRI Institutional Biosafety Committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, June 11, from 3:30 to 4:30 PM, in the DAR Conference Room. To receive committee consideration, registration documents must be submitted to Environmental Health & Safety via email to rachellv@scripps.edu by Friday, May 30.


At the Auditorium: Mainly Mozart, the Brain and Musical Forms, SD Symphony

At the Auditorium at TSRI in La Jolla CA, Mainly Mozart’s Spotlight Chamber Music series will present a concert on Saturday, May 17, 7:30 PM, with the Orion String Quartet and the Windscape quintet performing Bach’s Art of the Fugue and works by Mozart and Dvorak. A pre-concert reception will be held at 6:30 PM. Ticket and program information are available at the Mainly Mozart website.

The San Diego Symphony’s Chamber Music Series will present a concert on Tuesday, May 20, 7:30 PM, featuring award-winning violinist Vadim Repin performing Bartók’s Piano Quintet in C Major, Op. 14. For ticket and additional program information, visit the symphony’s website.

The Mozart and the Mind series will present American experimental music pioneer David Rosenboom, exploring “Concurrent Complexity—Linked Brains and Musical Forms” on Saturday, May 31, 5 PM, followed at 6 PM by free open-air, interactive performance by Ringing Minds, featuring Rosenboom, ethnomusicologist Alex Khalil and neuroscientist and artist Tim Mullen. Mainly Mozart’s Spotlight Chamber series will offer a concert, Romance of D’Ambrosio, on Saturday, May 31, 7:30 PM, featuring musicians Ida Kavafian, Benjamin Beilman, Paul Neubauer, Che-Yen Chen, Peter Wiley and Eric Kim performing D’Ambrosio’s String Quartet in C Minor, Op. 42 and Brahms String Sextet No. 1 in B-Flat Major, Op. 18.
