CA Industry Bridge Program Offers Visit to Miltenyi Biotec

Registration is now open for the next event in the Industry Bridge Program—a visit to Miltenyi Biotec, a global provider of products and services that advance biomedical research to clinical applications. Available to postdoctoral fellows and fourth-year graduate students on The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) California campus, participation is limited to seven attendees on a first-come, first-serve basis. This visit will be held on Friday, November 7, 10 AM.

Presented by the Society of Fellows, the Industry Bridge Program arranges on-site visits to biotech and pharmaceutical companies during which participants can learn about industry careers, obtain industry exposure, interact with industry scientists and learn how to effectively transition to industry.

Eligibility, specific application procedures and guidelines can be found on the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office webpage. Preference will be given to first-time applicants; only fully completed applications are eligible. Participants must review TSRI’s intellectual property information prior to the event.

Benefits Reminder: Open Enrollment Begins Monday, October 28

Open Enrollment begins Monday, October 28, at 8 AM, and ends Friday, November 8, at 5 PM Pacific time. During this annual opportunity, TSRI employees may make changes to their benefit selections and, if eligible, enroll—or re-enroll—in the Health Care and/or Dependent Care Spending Accounts for the 2014 plan year. New plan information was e-mailed to participants’ TSRI email addresses and should have been received around October 7.

An important note: participants in the Healthcare or Dependent Care Spending Accounts in 2013 still must log on and elect a new deferral amount to participate in 2014. Employees’ 2013 election WILL NOT roll over to 2014.

Participants with questions regarding Open Enrollment should contact Human Resources at the Benefits Line, 858-784-8487 or benefits@scripps.edu. A schedule of other Open Enrollment events is available at http://www.scripps.edu/hr/calendar/california_events.html for the California campus and at http://www.scripps.edu/hr/calendar/florida_events.html for the Florida campus.

Lunch & Learn: The Courage to Act

Making a significant personal or professional change is often difficult and stress-inducing, even when the change can be a positive move. The next Lunch & Learn presentation—Healthy Risk Taking, The Courage to Act—aims to offer guidance for those life moments. The session will be held on Wednesday, November 13, noon to 1 PM in the Keck Amphitheater in the Beckman Building on the CA campus.

Daphne Lurie, director of the TSRI Office of Counseling and Psychological Services, will conduct the session. A licensed psychologist for nearly 20 years, she holds a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of South Carolina. Working with individual clients and couples at TSRI, Lurie has specialty interests in multicultural concerns and relationship, health-related and identity / adjustment issues.

Lurie’s presentation will cover:

  • The value of healthy risk taking
  • The difference between healthy and foolish risks
  • Steps to move in the right direction

CA Onsite Clinics Scheduled for October 28 and 30

The California campus onsite immunization clinics are scheduled for Monday, October 28 and Wednesday, October 30, from 9:30 to 11:30 AM in Building 3366, room 240. Conducted by Sharp Rees-Stealy staff, the clinics provide hepatitis B vaccination free of charge to all TSRI employees. Appointments are not needed.

Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Occupational Medicine must pre-authorize all other procedures based on the employee's working conditions. These procedures include tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccines and other titers, immunizations and procedures.

TSRI no longer requires TB testing for TSRI faculty and staff whose work includes exposure to animals. TB testing is provided for employees who, in the scope of their TSRI positions, provide human health care, such as registered nurses, work with human subjects or work with nonhuman primates. Employees authorized for the one-visit Quantiferon tuberculosis test may find further information on the Centers for Disease Control TB Fact Sheet.

After EH&S pre-authorization, individuals who cannot attend the onsite clinic may visit the Sharp Rees-Stealy occupational medicine clinic by calling (858) 526-6150. The clinic is located at 10243 Genetic Center Drive, off Mira Mesa Boulevard. For further details, contact Rachel Longville, rachellv@scripps.edu or x4-8457.
