Matthew Disney Wins Science and Technology Excellence Award

Matthew Disney, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), has won the Excellence Award in Science and Technology Research from the India-U.S. Chamber of Commerce, South Florida, for outstanding contribution in the field of research and education in chemical biology.

The award announcement cited Disney’s many honors, including the Eli Lily Award from the American Chemical Society and his research in developing compounds that target genetic abnormalities that cause diseases such as myotonic dystrophy, Huntington’s disease and cancer.

The India-U.S. Chamber of Commerce, South Florida, was established to promote the development and improvement of economic, commercial, cultural and financial relationships between India and the State of Florida. Disney received the award at the group’s annual gala at the Hyatt Hotel in Coral Gables.


FL ResearchFest to Be Held October 24

The Scripps Florida Society of Research Fellows (SF-SRF) will host the fourth annual Research Fest 2013: Scientific Symposium & Vendor Show on Thursday, October 24, from 10 AM to 4 PM, in Building B.

More than 40 selected postdoctoral fellows and graduate students will offer presentations on research advances and discoveries in the TSRI Departments of Cancer Biology, Chemistry, Metabolism and Aging, Infectious Disease, Molecular Therapeutics and Neuroscience.

The morning will feature seminars in the Fink Auditorium and presentation of the SF-SRF Faculty Mentorship Award, followed by scientific poster session from 1 to 4 PM. Some 40 scientific vendors will showcase and demonstrate their products and technologies from 10 AM to 4 PM in Scripps Café and classrooms.

CA Campus Workshops Explore Career Options

Three workshops exploring career options will be offered by the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office in November for postdoctoral fellows and graduate students on the CA campus.

Cultural Aspects & Best Practices for a Successful Transition & Career
This one-day course for postdoctoral fellows interested in careers in the life sciences industry will be held Saturday, November 2, 8 AM to 5 PM at the University of California, San Diego, Institute of the Americas, 10111 N Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla. The workshop will cover corporate culture and practices, intellectual property, regulatory affairs, product development and project management.

The course is eligible for the Society of Fellows professional development reimbursement program. The $50 course fee, plus a $3.74 Eventbrite fee, includes break refreshments, boxed lunch and course materials. The workshop is presented by Bio4Front, a biotechnology education company, and sponsored by the Torrey Pines Training Consortium, a local collaboration of TSRI, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and University of California, San Diego.

Career Transitions
This three-session workshop, featuring a confidential, small-group environment, aims to help postdoctoral fellows and graduate students clarify and pursue career options. Participants must register for and commit to all sessions, to be held on Wednesdays, November 6, 13 and 20, from 3 to 5 PM, in the Graduate Office Conference Room, 3377 North Torrey Pines Court, La Jolla.

Workshop topics will include identifying transferable professional skills; examining personal values, interests and decision-making styles; matching skills and personality to career options and articulating short- and long-term career goals. The group will be co-facilitated by Ryan Wheeler, manager of the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office, and Daphne Lurie, director of TSRI’s Counseling and Psychological Services office.

Getting from Job Ad to Interview
Tips on preparing to land an industry or other non-academic job is the focus this workshop offered by the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office on Thursday, November 7, from 3:30 to 4:30 PM in the Human Resources training facility, Room 205 at 3377 North Torrey Pines Court.

Presented by Wheeler, the workshop will help participants:

  • Highlight accomplishments
  • Structure an effective resume
  • Write compelling cover letters
  • Develop an online professional profile

FL Seminar: ‘Investing 101’

Tips on successfully managing investment strategies will be presented in an “Investing 101” seminar arranged by the Career and Postdoctoral Services Office and scheduled for Tuesday, October 22, from 1:30 to 3 PM in Classroom B158 on the Florida campus.

The seminar will feature Phillip F. Doherty, financial advisor and senior financial services executive at MetLife. Topics will cover basic investment concepts and terminology, asset classes, bull and bear markets, mutual funds and other income sources. Registration is available online.
