Sergio Catz and Gennaro Napolitano Awarded Cystinosis Research Grant

TSRI Associate Professor Sergio Catz and Gennaro Napolitano, research associate in the Catz lab, have been awarded a one-year grant from the Cystinosis Research Foundation (CRF) for their research “Small Molecule Regulators of Vesicular Trafficking to Enhance Lysosomal Exocytosis in Cystinosis.”

A rare, deadly metabolic and genetic disease that slowly destroys every organ in the body, including the liver, kidneys, eyes, muscles, thyroid and brain, cystinosis afflicts about 500 children and young adults in the United States and 2,000 worldwide.


Academic Careers Roundtable: Social Media for Scientists

TSRI Associate Professor Andrew Su will lead a discussion on the effective use of social media for scientists at the next CA campus Academic Careers Roundtable, scheduled for Thursday, August 29, noon to 1 PM.

The bimonthly professional development series for postdoctoral fellows and students offers an informal conversational setting with guest faculty members. Lunch is provided; registration for the event, to be held in the graduate office conference room on the third-floor of the 3377 Building, is required.


Clinic Helps Improve American English Communication Skills

The American English Pronunciation and Communication Clinic’s winter session begins Monday, September 9, on the California campus. The clinic is a joint program of the TSRI Career and Postdoctoral Services Office and California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM).

Under direct supervision of university faculty, CSUSM graduate students in the Masters in Education, Communicative Sciences and Disorders program will provide speech language services to TSRI graduate students and research associates.

The 12-week clinic provides one-on-one help to improve American English oral and written communications skills. Individual goals will be developed for clinic participants focusing on:

  • Acquisition of an American English accent
  • Remediation of existing speech errors (e.g., lisp, stuttering)
  • Public speaking and presentations
  • Social conversation skills
  • Executive-function strategies for planning, organizing and producing written text
  • Public presentation of written materials

Sessions will be provided in morning and early afternoon time slots on the following dates:

  • September 9, 16, 23, 30
  • October 7, 14, 21, 28
  • November 4, 11, 18
  • December 2

The TSRI Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, September 11, 3:30 to 4:30 PM in the Faculty Club Tennis Court Room. ScrippsAssists CA Fills Backpacks for At-Risk Students

ScrippsAssists’s second annual Back-to-School Backpack Drive filled 32 knapsacks with basic school supplies for San Diego elementary and high school students in at-risk families struggling to make ends meet. The backpacks were delivered to families through Home Start, Inc., a long-time ScrippsAssists community partner.

FL Campus Debuts Mentoring Program

A recently launched Mentoring Program for Scripps Florida postdoctoral fellows and graduate students features faculty-led small group discussions on selected topics. Organized by graduate student Briana Weiser and others in the Society of Research Fellows, the first session in early August tackled career choices, patents, interview processes and lab management. Larry DeGreif Retires

“I never thought of this as a job,” says Larry DeGreif, director of Environmental Services, as he retires after 16 years with TSRI. “It has been a good challenge and interesting, with a great support team.” A former Navy corpsman serving with the Marines, DeGreif will spend part of his retirement volunteering with the Wounded Warrior Project, assisting injured military servicemen and women in their transitions to civilian life.
