Library Tip: NIH-Funded Manuscripts Require Submission to PubMed Central

The Kresge Library advises researchers that any peer-reviewed National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded article must be deposited into PubMed Central (PMC) upon acceptance by the journal, as required by the NIH Public Access Policy and as a "Term & Condition" of all NIH grants. A PubMed Central ID (PMCID) is required for most articles listed on NIH grants and progress reports. PMCIDs are assigned once a manuscript’s deposit process is complete.

To comply, the corresponding author and/or principal investigator must take multiple actions “before, during, and after” publication of an NIH-funded article: before submitting the manuscript to the journal, during the deposit process, and after acceptance by the journal.

Kresge Library staff can assist researchers and administrative staff with the PMC submission process. Contact staff for help in locating existing PMCIDs, identifying published articles that require PMCIDs, submitting manuscripts to PMC, and using tools such as EndNote and MyNCBI to track compliance for an NIH grant.

For additional information on the NIH Public Access Policy or for assistance with compliance, consult the Kresge Library’s NIH Public Access Policy [http://library.scripps.edu/nihpolicy] webpage or contact the Kresge Library Help Desk at (858) 784-8705 or helplib@scripps.edu.

Onsite Immunization Clinic March 5 and 7

The next California campus onsite immunization clinics will be held Monday, March 5, and Wednesday, March 7 from 9:30 to 11:30 AM in Room 325 of the 3366 Building.

Conducted by Sharp Rees-Stealy staff, the clinics provide hepatitis B vaccination free of charge to all Scripps Research employees. Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Occupational Medicine must pre-authorize all other procedures based on the employee's working conditions. These procedures include:

  • Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) vaccines
  • A new one-visit Quantiferon tuberculosis test. (For information on this test, read the Centers for Disease Control TB Fact Sheet.)
  • Other tests, including titers, immunizations, and procedures according to the Scripps Research employee job function.

Individuals who cannot attend the onsite clinic may visit the Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Center in Mira Mesa or Kearny Mesa after EH&S pre-authorization. In addition, appointments can be scheduled at the Sharp Rees-Stealy Occupational Medicine Office by calling 858-653-6150.

SOF Sets Sail in Search of Gray Whales

Taking to the sea in search of gray whales, dolphins, and other marine life, the Society of Fellows invites Scripps California faculty and staff to join its Whale Watching Trip off the San Diego coast on Sunday, March 11.

Embarking from Flagship Cruises & Events (1050 North Harbor Drive, San Diego), the sea-creature spotters will gather at 8:45 AM to board the vessel at 9:15 AM, returning to the dock at 1 PM.

Each Scripps Research participant may bring one guest. Available on a first-come, first-served basis, discounted ticket prices are $35 for adults (ages 13-54) and $20 for children (ages 4-12). Reservations and advance payment should be made to event organizer Emi Casas of the Felding-Habermann lab (MEM150) or Joey Garcia of the Gallay lab (IMM313).

Birch Aquarium naturalists will guide the tour. Participants, who will receive Gray Whale fact sheets and coupons to the aquarium, are encouraged to bring sunscreen, warm clothes, and binoculars. An onboard snack bar and restrooms will be available. Make-good tickets will be issued if no whales are sighted on the tour.
