SOF Vendor Show Now Features Seminars

Society of Fellows (SOF) has added a new element to its annual vendor show—a series of 30- and 60-minute vendor seminars demonstrating new technologies and methods to facilitate and/or accelerate research, according to SOF event co-chairs Devin Sok and Jack Scatizzi.

Scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, 9 AM to 2:30 PM, in the Immunology building, Beckman Center, and Immunology Plaza, the event will showcase more than 90 national and local biotech companies, providing researchers with opportunities to compare application and price differences for a wide range of products and services used daily in their labs.

One of the largest scientific vendor shows in the San Diego area, the SOF event is open to researchers from Scripps Research and neighboring institutions. Show attendees who visit at least three vendor tables in each of the show's three locations (nine tables total) are eligible for a raffle prize, including five Kindle Touches, five $100 Amazon gift cards, and five Apple iPod Shuffles. Winners will be determined at the end of the show and will be notified by email.

Event proceeds will fund SOF programs, including career development seminars, distinguished lecture series, mentoring lunches, an annual research symposium, and travel awards, as well as the group's social events.

For details on the Vendor Show and other SOF activities, visit the SOF webpage.

Counseling Services: Ten Tips on Parenting

Facing the physical, emotional, and other uncertainties of having a baby, how can expectant parents sort through various opinions from family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, talk show hosts, and experts in different fields? To help, the Counseling and Psychological Services Office offers the latest in its Ten Tips series, “Ten Tips on Parenting: A Few ‘Golden Rules.’”

“All the unsolicited advice can seem overwhelming for new parents, who may only want only to know the fundamentals,” said Daphne Lurie, director of the Counseling and Psychological Services Office. “I’ve put together a few simple tips that are easy to remember and, hopefully, easy to draw on. Then, when all is said and done, think of this: your task as a parent is to keep your children safe and loved. All the rest is icing on the cake.”

The complete Ten Tips on Parenting article is available on the Counseling and Psychological Services website.

NWiS Florida Plans Summer Turtle Encounter

Early signups are a must for the Scripps Florida Network for Women in Science (NWiS) summer social event: a nighttime visit to sea turtle nests at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach on two dates, Wednesday, June 13 and Thursday, June 14.

At this time of year, sea turtles come to nest on the shores of Juno and Jupiter beaches. During June and July, the Loggerhead Center offers guided small-group “Turtle Walk” tours to see the creatures digging and laying their nests in the sand. Tours begin at 8:30 PM.

To register, visit the center’s Turtle Walk webpage. The $17 cost ($12 for center members) is paid at registration.

“Register for the Wednesday date, and if there are more than 10 people, then please register for the Thursday date,” instructs Briana Weiser, NWiS Florida organizing group member. She also advises participants to carefully read the center’s instructions to prepare for the event.

Registered attendees are asked to email names and tour date to NWiS member Heather Rust.
