Registration Open for “Innovate California: A Symposium on Medical Innovation”

The Council for American Medical Innovation invites members of the Scripps Research community to join more than 300 leaders in the fields of health, education, biotech, and politics as they examine challenges facing our economy and health care system during a symposium, “Innovate California,” on Tuesday, December 13 at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. The symposium aims to preserve and underline the importance of continued medical innovation and its contribution to job growth in California.

Former House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt will emcee the summit and Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom will provide a keynote speech on California’s leadership role in medical innovation. Also featured are two dynamic panel discussions among federal and state leaders to discuss the role biopharmaceuticals and life sciences play in the national and state economy.

A central piece of the program is the presentation of the The Milken Institute’s new study: “The Global Biomedical Industry: Preserving U.S. Leadership.” This study takes a global view of the US rise to world leadership in the sector over the past 30 years, and the current trends emerging across Europe, Japan, China, India, and Singapore that should cause us to reexamine our place, and our current policy environment.

Florida Distinguished Lecturer Series: “How the Golgi Works and How Cells Get Enough Cholesterol”

The Scripps Florida Society of Research Fellows’ (SRF) Distinguished Lecturer Series presentation, scheduled for Monday, December 5, will feature Suzanne Pfeffer, professor of biochemistry at the Stanford University School of Medicine. The lecture will be held from 11 AM to noon in the Rodney B. Fink Auditorium. Pfeffer’s topic is “How the Golgi Works and How Cells Get Enough Cholesterol.”

Pfeffer’s laboratory investigates how human cells put receptors in the right place, research important to understanding diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, neurological disorders, and stroke. Specifically, Pfeffer research focuses on the Golgi complex, a processing station for all proteins secreted by cells. In addition, her lab studies the NPC1 protein, key to cholesterol regulation in lysosomes.

For further details on the SRF Distinguished Lecturer series, contact program chair Xin (Cindy) Qi, senior staff scientist in the Kodadek lab.
