TSRI Graduate School Brings Home Fresh Top-10 Rankings from U.S. News & World Report

The Scripps Research Institute’s (TSRI) graduate program was once again rated among the nation’s best graduate schools in the biological and chemical sciences, according to the latest issue of U.S. News & World Report.

The TSRI program now ranks seventh overall in chemistry and ninth overall in the biological sciences, in addition to second in the specialty of biochemistry and sixth in organic chemistry.

“One should probably take these rankings with a grain of salt, but the U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on a survey of our peers,” said Jamie Williamson, dean of TSRI graduate and postdoctoral studies. “It is very nice to be in the top 10 in both chemistry and biology—we are in some very good company! What’s remarkable about our program is that we are the only biomedical research institute in the top 10… all of the others are either private Ivy League schools or major state universities.  This is a strong testament to our faculty!”

Established in 1989, the mission of the TSRI graduate program is to train the next generation of scientists at the interface of biological and chemical sciences. It has granted more than 460 PhD degrees, with a current student enrollment of approximately 240 students.

In compiling its 2014 list, U.S. News & World Report analyzed 205 graduate programs in chemistry and 261 in biology. The publication last rated graduate schools in 2010.

The latest rankings of the nation’s top 10 doctoral programs in chemistry are:

1.

California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech)
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
University of California (UC), Berkeley

4.

Harvard University
Stanford University

6.

University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

7. TSRI
Northwestern University
9. University of Wisconsin (UW), Madison
10. Columbia University
Cornell University

In the biological sciences, they are:

1. Harvard University
MIT
Stanford
4.

UC Berkeley

5. Cal Tech
Johns Hopkins University
7.

UC San Francisco
Yale University

9.

TSRI
Princeton University

In the specialty of biochemistry, TSRI ranked second after UC Berkeley, and ahead of UW Madison, Harvard, UC San Francisco, Stanford, MIT, Yale, Cal Tech and UC San Diego.

In the specialty of organic chemistry, TSRI ranked sixth, following Harvard, Cal Tech, UC Berkeley, MIT and Stanford, and ahead of Princeton, UW Madison, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and Yale.

The complete 2014 U.S. News & World Report rankings are available on the publication’s website.
