Building a Legacy
Scripps Research was founded through the visionary generosity of Ellen Browning Scripps, which included naming the institute as a beneficiary of her estate. Her gift planning laid the foundation for the institute’s success today. Over a century later, Scripps Research has transformed into a biomedical powerhouse that leads the world in unraveling longstanding mysteries in bioscience and translating those breakthroughs into lifesaving innovations.
By including Scripps Research in your plans for future giving, like Ellen Browning Scripps, you become a catalyst for transformative science. Imagine what powerful discoveries, novel advancements or new cures your future support could spur onward. We invite you to begin building a legacy with Scripps Research today.
All donors who have documented their planned future giving are welcomed into The Legacy Circle at Scripps Research, a community that celebrates your decision to support scientific discovery in the years to come.

Consider the different ways you could build your legacy at Scripps Research.
Charitable gift annuity
When you make a formal agreement to support Science Changing Life by donating cash, stocks or other assets to Scripps Research through a charitable gift annuity, you (or someone you designate) can receive a fixed income stream for the rest of your life. You’ll receive a tax deduction at the time you make your donation and can choose to begin receiving income immediately or defer payments until a later date, such as retirement.
Charitable remainder trust
You can support scientific discovery, reduce your taxes and receive an income stream for your lifetime when you create a charitable remainder trust designating Scripps Research as your charity of choice. Charitable remainder trusts allow you to avoid capital gains tax on assets held in the trust, whether through a Charitable Remainder Unitrust (with a variable rate of income based on market value) or Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (with a fixed rate of income).
Retained life estate
Your home can support scientific research while sheltering you for the rest of your life. When you transfer your home’s title to Scripps Research, you avoid capital gains tax on the appreciated value, receive a charitable contribution tax deduction and continue living right where you are.
Charitable lead trusts
A charitable lead trust is designed to reduce the taxable income of your beneficiaries by first donating a portion of the trust’s income to Scripps Research. After a fixed number of years, the remaining assets in the trust go to you, your loved ones or any other beneficiary you designate.
Bequests
You can fuel future innovation and medical breakthroughs by naming Scripps Research as a beneficiary in your will or living trust. To begin designing your legacy, you can use FreeWill, a simple online tool for starting your estate plans. Once you’ve established a legally valid will or trust that names Scripps Research as a beneficiary, please let us know by completing this form.
Gifts of retirement and life insurance plans
If you have an IRA, 401(k), life insurance policy or any other assets not included in your will, you can support life-changing science at Scripps Research by naming the institute as a beneficiary for these non-probate assets. You may also be eligible to directly donate to Scripps Research from your IRA during your lifetime through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). Learn more about QCDs here.
