In Memoriam: Preston Smith (1963-2014)

Preston Smith, information technology analyst on the Scripps Florida campus, died April 23 from cancer. He was 51.

Smith, who joined TSRI in September 2009, was responsible for running the campus’s media and telecommunications systems.

“I will always remember Preston as a cheerful presence at Scripps Florida,” said Cary Thomas, a TSRI senior vice president. “His expertise with computer, telephone and audio-visual technologies meant that he touched virtually everyone on the Florida campus, but he also had an impact on the California campus through the distance learning systems. Whether supporting the faculty, graduate students and staff or monitoring Board meetings or public events, Preston was the competent guy ready to fix any glitch.

"His ‘can do’ attitude and willingness to help others will surely be his legacy at Scripps,” Thomas continued. “The outpouring of support for Preston and his family in these difficult weeks are testimony of the way he touched so many people in a positive way. We will all miss him so much.

Smith attended EME International Baccalaureate Studies program in Sao Paulo, Brazil, studying physics and mathematics. He earned a degree in computer science from Florida Atlantic University. An avid musician who played several instruments, he was also a car enthusiast, website administrator and amateur photographer and videographer.

Smith is survived by his wife, Michelle, and 11-year old son, Preston. A family memorial service will be held Saturday, May 31, 11 AM, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 345 S. Military Trail, West Palm Beach, Florida 33415. At 2 PM, immediately following the service, Scripps Florida will hold a celebration of Smith’s life on campus.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be given in his name to TSRI. See https://www.scripps.edu/tribute/home/tribute_page?id=169
