Our laboratory is shared with the groups of Jim Fee and Dave Goodin, creating an interactive environment for postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and technicians to share ideas and expertise on a daily basis. Experiments entail all stages of protein expression and purification from molecular biology to crystallization. Both protein engineering and control of biochemical procedures are essential for membrane protein crystallization. Instrumentation is available for a wide range of biochemical and biophysical experiments. In-house X-ray screening and data collection make use of a Bruker micro-focus source coupled with multi-layer optic and CCD detector. For synchrotron experiments we use highly automated, remote access SSRL beam lines on a monthly basis to screen thousands of crystals and collect hundreds of data sets per year. Extensive computational resources are available in the laboratory and at Scripps for crystallographic calculations and structural analysis.
