Ways to Give

You know that supporting scientific research will have a tremendous impact, but what’s the most responsible way to give? The personable staff in our Philanthropy department can recommend several avenues—completely customizable—for adding your financial backing to the groundbreaking scientific investigation and drug discovery accomplished at Scripps Research. Depending on your preferences, you can arrange to receive tax benefits now or in the future, establish a lasting memorial or even gain an ongoing income stream. Just as no two donors are exactly alike, no two donations are made in exactly the same way. This is your mission. Let us help you achieve it.

Stock and Mutual Funds

You may prefer to give appreciated securities directly to Scripps Research rather than sell them and donate their proceeds, as this allows for certain tax benefits and can help diversify your assets. If you own securities that have lost value, you can sell the stock, take the capital loss deduction, and make a gift to Scripps Research.

Whether your stocks are held by yourself or are kept with a bank/broker, it is important that you notify Scripps Research in advance of making a gift of securities. This will help to ensure that proper crediting and timely acknowledgement take place.

To ask questions or make a non-cash gift of stocks or bonds or mutual funds, contact the Office of Philanthropy at (800) 788-4931.

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD)

Use Your Traditional IRA to Make Your Charitable Gifts

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) provides you with an excellent opportunity to make a gift during your lifetime from an asset that would be subject to multiple levels of taxation if it remained in your taxable estate.

To qualify
  • You must be age 70½ or older at the time of gift.
  • Transfers must be made directly from a traditional IRA account by your IRA administrator to Scripps Research. Funds that are withdrawn by you and then contributed do NOT qualify. Gifts from 401k, 403b, SEP and other plans do not qualify.
  • Gifts must be outright. Distributions to donor-advised funds or life-income arrangements such as charitable remainder trusts and charitable gift annuities do not qualify.

Benefits — qualified charitable distributions
  • Can total up to $100,000.
  • Are not included in your gross income for federal income tax purposes on your IRS Form 1040 (no charitable deduction is available, however).
  • Count towards your required minimum distribution for the year from your IRA.

Are you 70.5 or older and have a traditional IRA? Give from your account without dipping into your taxable income.

If you are 70.5 or older and have a traditional IRA, you can use this secure online tool to make a donation from your IRA account. IRA gifts are generally not recognized as taxable income and if you must take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) this year, giving from your IRA is a compassionate way to fulfill it. Using this online tool you can learn more and fill out the forms from your IRA custodian in just a few minutes, or print out the forms to fill them out offline.

For more information about making a Qualified Charitable Distribution to Scripps Research, please contact the Office of Philanthropy (800) 788-4931. Also, make sure to let us know when you direct a rollover check to our office.
