Two Scripps Research Institute Graduate Students Receive Roche Excellence in Chemistry Awards
LA JOLLA, CA, May 31, 2011 – Two Scripps Research Institute graduate students, David Sarlah and Jun Shi, have been honored with Roche's Excellence in Chemistry Awards for research accomplishments in the field of organic chemistry.
Sarlah, who works in the laboratory of Scripps Research Chemistry Department Chair K.C. Nicolaou, and Shi, who works in the laboratory of Professor Phil Baran, were among just 12 advanced graduate students from across the nation who received the 2011 award. Winners were nominated by their faculty advisors and selected by a committee of Roche scientists.
"These students come from a broad range of universities and experiences and are some of the best and brightest in the field," said Karen Lackey, vice president and head of discovery chemistry at Roche. "We welcome their insights and expertise as well as the opportunity to showcase how chemistry plays a vital role in the development of new medicines."
The winning students received a crystal award and an honorarium, and presented their research projects at the global biotech company's annual two-day "Roche Symposium: Excellence in Chemistry" in Nutley, New Jersey. Also during the symposium, the students had opportunities to hear overviews and case studies of the drug discovery process.
