Scripps Florida "Kicks Off" 2009-2010 Front Lines of Hope Discussion Series
JUPITER, FL, – More than 150 guests celebrated the kick off to the second season of the highly-acclaimed Front Lines of Hope Discussion Series at Scripps Florida in Jupiter on November 18. This invitation-only event featured Dr. William R. Roush, Professor of Chemistry, Associate Dean of the Kellogg School of Science and Technology and Executive Director of Medicinal Chemistry at Scripps Florida. Dr. Roush spoke about The Link Between Graduate Education, Chemistry and Biomedical Research: A Pathway that Impacts Society.
One of the world's leading organic chemists, Dr. William R. Roush is focused on the synthesis of natural products, the creation of new synthetic methods and strategies, and drug discovery problems in medicinal and bioorganic chemistry—targeting cancer, anti-infective, metabolic and neurological diseases.
As Associate Dean of Scripps Research's graduate school, Professor Roush is profoundly invested in training the next generation of research scientists. He sees the graduate students in his program as the glue that makes all of his research work and says they have completely changed his way of thinking. He sees these amazing students as the catalyst for change. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the Scripps Research graduate program 6th in the country in chemistry and 7th in biological sciences. Dr. Roush believes that the graduate school students are an integral "component of the 'behind the scenes' engine of innovation that drives Scripps' research programs forward".
Professor Roush came to Scripps Florida from the University of Michigan where he was chairman of their nationally ranked Department of Chemistry. After receiving his doctoral degree from Harvard, he moved on to professorships at MIT and Indiana University. He sits on the editorial advisory boards of numerous chemistry journals and has published over 270 papers in leading scientific journals. He was recently named Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as a Fellow of the American Chemical Society.
The Front Lines of Hope is a series of programs that serves to educate and enlighten all who attend on some of the most challenging issues of human health. "This series will showcase some of the ground-breaking work taking place at Scripps from some of the premier scientists in the world," said Dr. Harry Orf, vice president of scientific operations at Scripps Florida.
