In 1991, the institute became an independent corporationThe 
          Scripps Research Institute. Richard A. Lerner was named the president 
          of the new entity. Throughout the 1990s, Scripps Research scientists 
          continued to make major breakthroughs in chemistry, immunology, neuroscience, 
          structural biology, molecular medicine, and other fields. The number 
          of investigators and support staff continued to grow to more than 2000. 
        
         In 1996, The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology was established 
          with a major gift from the ALSAM Foundation. Also in 1996, The Arnold 
          and Mabel Beckman Center for Chemical Sciences, a five-story, 165,000-square-foot 
          facility named after its key funding contributor, opened its doors.
