John MullenTitle: Security guard 
                    Duties: In his post in front of the library, Mullen 
                    makes sure that only authorized individuals (employees of 
                    The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) and doctors and patients 
                    of Scripps Clinic) use the library. "Some people, like salesmen, 
                    try to get past me by walking fast. But I say, 'Excuse me, 
                    I don't think I saw your I.D.' But the people I know have 
                    proper I.D., I'm easy on them sometimes." 
                   Favorite Part of the Job: "I get a kick out of the 
                    students. They're all pretty smart, or they wouldn't be here." 
                   Other Perks: "Good people to work for." "Good medical 
                    care" at Scripps Clinic. 
                   Background: Service in the military: the army, the 
                    navy, and the marines. "I sailed as a civilian marine for 
                    11 years." Positions included navy corpsman, ship's nurse, 
                    x-ray technician, and instructor. 
                    Started at TSRI: 1990. "I've worked in different 
                    buildings and on all the shifts." 
                    Extracurriculars: Extracurricular: Reading military 
                    history. Work on the yard and accomplishing other items on 
                    the "to do" list of his wife of 43 years. Visiting with his 
                    two daughters, two sons, and nine grandchildrenall boys. 
                    ("We're hoping for a girl next time.") Enjoying his four dogsincluding 
                    Violet, a 4.2-pound midget chihuahuaand 17-year-old
