Before the high school interns arrived in Scripps California labs, they attended a series of spring enrichment tutorials, organized by Kellogg School of Science and Technology graduate students Chris Martin and Amanda Wolfe, on topics including biomolecular visualization, chemical synthesis/combinatorial chemistry, grant support, and drug discovery.
Interns also attended a week-long "boot camp" (shown here), where interns learned basic lab procedures and other skills, such as documentation, notebook entry, and lab safety. Held at the Southern California Biotechnology Center at Miramar College, the event also included interns at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, and—a new partner this year—the La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology. These neighboring institutions also shared the institute's intern applicant pool.
