| In BriefKelker Awarded Arévelo FellowshipMatthew S. Kelker, a doctoral candidate at The Scripps Research Institute's 
        Kellogg School of Science and Technology, has been awarded the Jairo H. 
        Arévelo Fellowship for 2004. Founded in memory of Jairo H. Arévalo, 
        Scripps Research's first doctoral degree recipient, the fellowship is 
        awarded each year to a student selected by a committee of Scripps Research 
        faculty as having those qualities of academic scholarship, achievement, 
        enthusiasm, motivation, commitment, and thirst for knowledge that were 
        so apparent in Arévalo. Previous recipients have been John Karanicolas, 
        Fraser Hof, Matt Patricelli, Danielle Bodrero-Hoggan, and Vicki Tsui.
 Department of Chemistry Presents Frontiers in Chemistry Symposium
 The Scripps Research Department of Chemistry presents the 15th annual 
        Frontiers in Chemistry Symposium on Friday, February 20. This year's symposium 
        is dedicated to Scripps Research Professor Julius Rebek, Jr., on the occasion 
        of his 60th birthday.
  Lectures, which will be held at the Neurosciences Institute Auditorium, 
        10640 John Jay Hopkins Drive, and are open to the public, will include: 
       
         9 AM: Professor K. C. Nicolaou of Scripps Research, "Introduction 
          and Welcome";  9:10  10 AM: Professor K. Barry Sharpless of Scripps Research, 
          the Amgen Lecturer, "Enzyme Inhibitor Synthesis In Situ";  10  10:50 AM: Professor Samuel J. Danishefsky of Sloan-Kettering 
          Institute and Columbia University, the Pfizer Lecturer, "On the Power 
          of Chemical Synthesis"; 10:50  11:30 AM: Professor David A. Evans of Harvard University, 
          the Merck Lecturer, "Studies in Assymetric Sybnthesis"; Rebek, the Optimer Lecturer, "The Inner Space of Molecules."  A lunch reception will follow from 1:10  2:30 PM in the Beckman 
        atrium. 
       Lunch & Learn: "Resolution: Goal Setting for 2004"
 Personal trainer Susan Czertak will speak on "Resolution: Goal Setting 
        for 2004," on Wednesday, February 11, from noon to 1 PM, as part of the 
        ongoing Lunch & Learn seminar series. The event, which will be held in 
        the W.M. Keck Amphitheater, The Beckman Center for Chemical Sciences, 
        will cover the topics of diet, nutrition, cardiovascular training, strength 
        training, and flexibility. No reservations are necessary. Please bring

 24 Hour Fitness Visits Campus
 Benefits Administration would like to announce that representatives from 
        24 Hour Fitness will be onsite Wednesday, February 18 from 11 AM to 2 
        PM to enroll employees in the health club at discounted memberships. The 
        enrollment will be held in the Human Resources office, 3377 North Torrey 
        Pines Court, second floor, small conference room (Human Resources personnel 
        at the front desk can help you locate this room). All employees except 
        graduate students are eligible for this benefit.
 TB Screenings, Hepatitis B Immunizations, Serum Draws, and Tetanus 
        Immunizations
 On Monday, February 9, Wednesday, February 11, and Friday, February 13, 
        personnel from Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group will be on-site to conduct 
        TB screenings, Hepatitis B immunizations, serum draws, and tetanus immunizations. 
        The clinics will be conducted at the Administrative Offices (3301 North 
        Torrey Pines Court) on the P1 level from 11 AM to 2 PM. No appointments 
        are necessary. TB screening requires a 48 to 72 hour follow-up. Individuals 
        receiving the TB screen on Monday will need to return on Wednesday, and 
        individuals screened on Wednesday will need to return on Friday. Initiation 
        of the TB screening process will not be available on Friday, but Hepatitis 
        B immunization, serum draws, and Tetanus immunizations will be. To learn

 West Palm Beach Mayor Visits La Jolla Campus
 
  Lois Frankel, mayor of West Palm Beach, Florida, 
        visited the La Jolla campus on February 5. Frankel discussed the launch 
        of Scripps Florida with institute personnel including Ben Morris, vice 
        president of facilities services.
