Michael Tencati

Title: Research assistant in the laboratory of Immunology Associate Professor Nigel Mackman.

Duties: Lab work in molecular biology, including cloning in a project to create a model with a conditional knock out of tissue factor, and techniques such as Southern blots, Northern blots, and Western blots. "I've learned a lot of techniques."

Started at TSRI: 2001.

Thoughts on the Mackman Lab: "The best thing is the people. They know how to strike a balance between working hard and joking around. It's also an honor to work for the world's leading expert in tissue factor."

Background: B.S. in Biochemistry and Archaeology from University of California, San Diego (including a three-month field experience on an archaeological dig in Jordan). Summer job at the University of California, Irvine, working on P13 kinase tumor research.

Career Plans: "I would like to do an M.D.-Ph.D. program. I've discovered I really like research, but I also want to see the effect I have on people."

Extracurriculars: Soccer (the cause of a recent broken wrist, and even more recent broken foot, although neither could keep him out of the lab), playing intramural games with the TSRI team. Also, hiking, backpacking, and other outdoor activities.
