 The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) Professor Bruce Beutler will speak 
        on "Genetic Dissection of Innate Immunity," as part of the Faculty Lecture 
        Series on Wednesday, April 17. The lecture will be held at 5 PM in the 
        Timken Amphitheater, Scripps Clinic, 10666 North Torrey Pines Road.
  Skaggs Lectures to Address Drug Discovery
 TSRI Professor Tamas Bartfai will be speaking as part of the Drug Discovery 
        Seminar Series, sponsored by The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology 
        and hosted by Skaggs Institute Director Julius Rebek, Jr. Talks will include:
  "Development of Drug Discovery Paradigms in Big Pharma Over the 
        Last 100 Years," on Thursday, April 25; 
        "Target-Based Drug Discovery," on Thursday, May 2; 
        "Selection of Clinical Candidates: Multiple Pressures," on Thursday, 
        May 9. 
       All lectures will be held from 5 to 6:30 PM in the Valerie Timken Amphitheater 
        of Green Hospital.
          National Defense University Students Visit TSRI
 TSRI hosted a one-day symposium about basic research on April 4 for students 
        of the National Defense University's Industrial College of the Armed Forces, 
        an educational institution established to study national resource management. 
        TSRI speakers included: Robin Clark (formerly Goldsmith), vice president 
        of communications; Thomas Northrup, associate patent counsel; Ben Neuman, 
        research associate in the Department of Neuropharmacology; Bruce Torbett, 
        associate professor in the Department of Molecular and Experimental Medicine; 
        Gerald Joyce, professor in the Department of Molecular Biology; and Martin 
        Friedlander, associate professor in the Department of Cell Biology. The 
        students, who are either military officers or government officials, are 
        completing a Master's program designed to prepare them for senior management 
        positions in the United States Department of Defense.
  CIMBio Hosts Open House
 All TSRI employees (and scientific neighbors) are invited to the Center 
        for Integrative Molecular Biosciences (CIMBio) open house on Wednesday, 
        April 10, 11 AM to 3 PM. CIMBio is located in the CarrAmerica B Building, 
        3215 Merryfield Row, on the East campus. The open house will provide the 
        opportunity for self-guided tours of the facility and discussions with 
        scientific staff. Refreshments will be provided.
  Career Workshops: "The Academic Life" and "Getting What You Want"
 TSRI's Office of Graduate Studies, the Society of Fellows, and the 
        Employee and Graduate Student Counseling Department, and The University 
        of California, San Diego's (UCSD) Career Services and Office of Graduate 
        Studies and Research join forces to bring you the 2002 Career Workshop 
        Series. Featured speakers are Associate Director Mary Morris Heiberger 
        and Graduate Student Counselor Julia Miller Vick of University of Pennsylvania 
        Career Services, co-authors of "The Academic Job Search Handbook."
  Workshop 1, "The Academic Life: Issues for Women Graduate Students and 
        Postdocs," will be held Tuesday, April 16, from 2:30 to 4 PM in the Horizon 
        Room, UCSD Career Services Center. 
        Workshop 2, "Getting What You Want: Job Search Strategy for the Academic 
        Market," will be held Wednesday, April 17, from 2:30 to 4:00 PM, in The 
        Valerie Timken Amphitheater, second floor, Scripps Green Hospital 10666 
        N. Torrey Pines Road.

        The due date for the Scientific Report and Faculty Database is Friday, 
        May 3. Principal investigators who hold joint appointments in the Skaggs 
        Institute for Chemical Biology are asked to submit an additional report 
        for the Skaggs Institute, due Friday, September 13. 
        Mother's Day to follow Spring Craft Fair
 This year, the Spring Craft Fair will be held shortly before Mother's 
        Dayon Thursday, May 2, from 11 AM to 2 PM in the Immunology Galleria. 
        The crafts for sale will include jewelry, homemade soaps, gift baskets, 
        airplants, chocolates, table runners, handmade quilts, children's clothing,

  Prescriptions by Mail
 The TSRI Prescription Plan through Advanced PCS enables employees to use 
        the PCS Mail Order Pharmacy. This mail order option is a quick and easy 
        way to fill medications that are taken on a regular basis. Employees may 
        receive a 90-day supply with a co-payment of $30 for brand name or $14 
        for generic medications. Mail order prescription forms may be obtained 
        from PCS, Human Resources, or online under Benefits Administration. For

  TB Screenings, Hepatitis B Immunizations, and Serum Draws
 On Monday, April 15, Wednesday, April 17, and Friday, April 19, personnel 
        from Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group will be onsite to conduct TB screenings, 
        Hepatitis B immunizations, and serum draws. The clinics will be conducted 
        at the Administrative Offices (3301 North Torrey Pines Court) on the P1 
        level from 11 AM to 2 PM. No appointments are necessary.
  TB screening requires a 48 to 72 hour follow-up. Individuals receiving 
        the TB screen on Monday will need to return on Wednesday; individuals 
        screened on Wednesday, will need to return on Friday. Initiation of the 
        TB screening process will not be available on Friday, but Hepatitis B 
        immunization and serum draws will be. To learn more about these programs,
