Thomas Barnett Title: Director, International Office 
        Duties: Running the International Office, which offers assistance 
        to the 800 to 1,000 international scholars that TSRI hosts each year and 
        the principal investigators they work with. 
        Started at TSRI: January 14, 2002. 
        Background: Assistant director, Human Resources at the University 
        of San Diego; director, Human Resources, Yavapai College District (Arizona); 
        director, Human Resources, Rice County, cities of Faribault and Northfield 
        (Minnesota); chief labor negotiator for law enforcement union (Minnesota); 
        and union representative with Northwest Airlines. His education includes 
        a law degree from William Mitchell College of Law, a bachelor's degree 
        from the University of San Diego, and training for the Catholic priesthood. 
        What He Likes about the Job at TSRI So Far: The opportunity to 
        focus his attention on one specialty, the collegial nature of TSRI staff 
        and the beauty of TSRI's location. 
        Plans for the International Office: Building on the strengths 
        of the International Office including the relationship with TSRI's counterparts 
        at other institutions. He also plans to develop a web site that will "disseminate 
        information to international scholars 24/7." 
        Philosophy on Navigating Post-September 11 Immigration Policy: 
        "It's like taking a flight. You have to go early and expect delays." 
        Extracurricular: Playing piano, watching hockey and soccer, and 
        travel.
