Paul Russell to Speak as Part of Faculty Lecture Series
The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) Professor Paul Russell will speak on "Travels on the Road to Mitosis: DNA Damage and Replication Checkpoints" as part of the Faculty Lecture Series on Wednesday, December 12 at 5 PM. The lecture will be held in the Timken Amphitheater, Scripps Clinic, 10666 North Torrey Pines Road.


Vascular Biology Faculty Join Cell Biology Department
Faculty who were previously part of the Department of Vascular Biology Department have joined TSRI's Department of Cell Biology, as the Division of Vascular Biology.

"We welcome these faculty to our department," says Sandra Schmid, chair of the Department of Cell Biology. "The new Division of Vascular Biology within our department will promote synergy in research on cardiovascular disease, one of the leading causes of death in this country."

Professor Martin Schwartz will head the Division of Vascular Biology.


Lunch and Learn: "Food and Mood"
Registered dietician Andrea Harrison will present "Food and Mood: How Food Affects Mood, How Mood Affects Food...Especially During the Holidays" as part of the ongoing "Lunch and Learn" seminar series, on Wednesday, December 12, noon to 1 PM, in the W.M. Keck Amphitheater, The Beckman Center for Chemical Sciences. No registration is necessary. If more information is needed, contact Jan Hill x4-2950.


New English Class To Begin
A new English-as-a-second-language class will begin Tuesday, December 11. The class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 PM every Tuesday evening in the Immunology Building, West Conference Room. The price for three months (12 classes) is $60. Each intermediate-level English class covers speaking and listening, idioms and vocabulary, and reading and writing. If you would like to improve your English communication skills and increase your ability to understand your friends and colleagues, movies, television shows, and the news, this class is for you. The instructor Cassandra Wadkins uses movies, games, television shows, grammar books, songs, drawings, and novels to teach standard American English. Have fun and learn English at the same time! Learn about Tool Options in Word
A class on Tools Options in Word will be held Tuesday, December 11. This class offers a review of some features of WordÑthe Options (Preferences) under WordÕs "Tools" menu and AutoFormat features. The class will begin at 8:30 AM and last until approximately 11 AM. To enroll, go to the computer training web page at http://www.scripps.edu/rc/training/dapps.html.


TB Screenings, Hepatitis B Immunizations, and Serum Draws
Monday December 10, Wednesday December 12, and Friday December 14, personnel from Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group will be on-site to conduct TB Screenings, Hepatitis B Immunizations and serum draws. The clinics will be conducted in Building 3301 N. Torrey Pines Court, Conference Room P1 from 11:00 AM through 2:00 PM on each of the three dates noted above.

Employees wishing/needing to participate in any of these programs need not make an appointment but should show up at the scheduled times. TB screening requires a 48-72 hour follow-up. For example, individuals receiving the TB screen on Monday will need to return on Wednesday, individuals screened on Wednesday, will need to return on Friday. Initiation of the TB screening process will not be available on Friday, but Hepatitis B immunization and serum draws will be.
