
Datsun Hsia
Title: Research assistant in the Schlaepfer lab
Duties: Working with the principal investigator to do what needs
to be donefrom washing glassware to setting up experiments and interpreting
data.
Started at TSRI: 1998
Background: B.S. in neurophysiology from University of California,
Davis.
Career Goals: Becoming a scientist or physician. "Overall, the
job has been a good experience. I've had a chance to learn what life as
a scientist is like and what it takes to do well in the field.
Favorite Part of the Job: "When most of the experiments come
together to help form a good story."
Biggest Challenge of the Job: "When the research isn't working
out. The light gets dimmer at the end of the tunnel."
Greatest Accomplishment: "Getting my first publication out."
Hsia is now an author on three scientific publications, with more in the
pipeline. "I'm pretty satisfied as long as I'm being productive."
Extracurricular Activities: Competing in triathalons (including
one Sunday, October 7 in Mission Bay), rockclimbing, backpacking, and
fishing. "And my team won the doormat prize for coming in last in the
Scripps Golf Tournament." Will the team enter again next year? "Absolutely.
That was the best round of golf we ever played!"
