In Brief
Nicolaou Honored Three Times Over
K.C. Nicolaou, founding chairman
of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) Department of Chemistry and L.S.
Skaggs Professor of Chemical Biology at The Skaggs Institute for Chemical
Biology at TSRI, was recently honored by three separate international
bodies.
The Council of the British Royal Society of Chemistry has invited Nicolaou
to the United Kingdom to give a lecture tour of research centers in the
upcoming academic year. A graduate of The University of London, Nicolaou
will return to the country of his alma mater as a Royal Society of Chemistry
Centenary Lecturer.
Nicolaou has also won the 2001 Ernst Schering Prize, sponsored by the
German nonprofit research foundation from which its name derives. He will
be awarded the prize later this year at the University of Madrid in Spain,
and will deliver a lecture there and at the University of Berlin in conjunction
with the award.
Also later this year, Nicolaou will travel to Nagoya University in Japan,
where he will conduct a one-day course seminar and accept The Nagoya Medal
of Organic Chemistry. He is the 2001 gold medalist.
All three organizations recognized Dr. Nicolaous outstanding contributions
to chemical synthesis and chemical biology in their award letters, particularly
his work in the total synthesis of complex natural products.
Dawson Named Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow
Cell Biology and Chemistry
Assistant Professor Philip Dawson has been selected to receive the highly
competitive Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship and its unrestricted two-year
grant. Dawson's work utilizes the total synthesis of proteins to study
hydrogen bonding, enzymatic catalysis and complex protein-protein interactions.
Asturias Wins Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Award
Cell Biology
Assistant Professor Francisco Asturias has been selected to receive a
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Scholar Award for a five-year period beginning
in July 2001. Asturias uses electron microscopy single-particle and two-dimensional
crystallography techniques to study the structures of macromolecular complexes
involved in regulation of DNA transcription and fatty acid synthesis.
Watson to Present DNA Thoughts
Nobel laureate James D. Watson, president of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory,
will present "DNA Thoughts" on Friday, March 23, as part of the Society
of Fellows Distinguished Lecturer Series. This event, which is open to
the public, will be held in the Timken Amphitheater of the Green Hospital
Building at 4 PM. Earlier that day, Watson will participate in a graduate
student discussion in the Roon Foundation Conference Room, Beckman Center
5S, at 2 PM, and a research associate discussion in the Roon Foundation
Conference Room, 2:55 PM. For more information, contact Avi Spier.
Attention 2000 Healthcare Spending Account Participants
If you participated in the Healthcare Spending Account (HCSA) during
the 2000 plan year, please remember that March 31 is the deadline for
submitting reimbursement claims to ReliaStar.
HCSA Reimbursement forms are available in the Human Resources Department.
You can stop by to pick up forms between 8 AM and 5 PM; request them by
calling Benefits Administration at x4-8487 or by sending an email to benefits@scripps.edu;
or download them from the Benefits Administration web page, http://www.scripps.edu/hr/benefits/forms/forms.htm#health.
Brush Up on Netscape
Have you ever used the proxy icon to add a location to your personal toolbar
or bookmark folder? Learn how to do this in the next Netscape class scheduled
for Tuesday, March 27, from 8:30 to 11 AM. Other topics will include setting
your home page, organizing your toolbars, and finding previously visited
sites using the history feature. To enroll, go to http://www.scripps.edu/rc/training/signup,
or e-mail training@scripps.edu.
TB Screenings, Hepatitis B Immunizations, and Serum Draws
On Monday March 19, Wednesday March 21, and Friday March 23, personnel
from Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group will be on-site to conduct TB screenings,
Hepatitis B immunizations, and serum draws. The clinics will be conducted
at the Administrative Offices (3301 North Torrey Pines Court) on the P1
level from 11 AM to 2 PM. No appointments are necessary.
TB screening requires a 48 to 72 hour follow-up. Individuals receiving
the TB screen on Monday will need to return on Wednesday; individuals
screened on Wednesday, will need to return on Friday. Initiation of the
TB screening process will not be available on Friday, but Hepatitis B
immunization and serum draws will be.
