Second TSRI High School Scholar Wins Scholarship from BIOCOM

A second student who participated in TSRI’s High School Student Summer Research Apprenticeship Program has been awarded a scholarship from BIOCOM/San Diego, a regional association for biotechnology, medical device, and bio-agriculture companies. Alan Martinez, who worked in the laboratory of TSRI Associate Professor Ann Feeney, is now finishing his junior year at San Diego State University and intends to pursue a career in clinical research in the field of neuro-immunology. Of 109 applicants, Martinez and Ruggero Carloz, who interned in the lab of TSRI Professor Charles Shevlin, were among five BIOCOM scholarship winners this year.


TSRI Volunteer and Donor Wins Essay Competition

Arthur Hill, a donor and volunteer development writer for TSRI, has won the Financial Times International Essay Competition. Hill, who is a survivor of hairy cell leukemia thanks to Leustatin, a drug developed at TSRI, will fly to London courtesy of the Financial Times to receive the award. Hill’s essay, “Genome Technology: Offering Hope to the World’s Poorest,” will be published in the Financial Times Biotechnology Supplement at the end of April.


Williamson to Speak on RNA as Part of Faculty Lecture Series

Professor Jamie Williamson of the Department of Molecular Biology will speak on "RNA Structure and RNA-Protein Interactions" on Wednesday, March 14 at 5 PM as part of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) Faculty Lecture Series. The lecture will be held in the Scripps Clinic amphitheater and will be followed by a reception in the Immunology Building.


Mentoring Next Topic of Developing Research Ethics Series

Professor Donald E. Mosier and Assistant Professor Janis H. Jackson will present "The Importance of Mentoring: Teaching Professional Responsibility by Example," the fifth lecture in the Developing Research Ethics for Responsible Conduct in Research series. The event will take place on Thursday, March 15, from 4:30 to 6 PM in the Valerie Timken Amphitheatre, Scripps Green Hospital, Scripps Clinic.


Watson to Present "DNA Thoughts"

Nobel laureate James D. Watson, president of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, will present "DNA Thoughts" on Friday, March 23, as part of the Society of Fellows Distinguished Lecturer Series. This event, which is open to the public, will be held in the Valerie Timken Amphitheater of the Green Hospital Building at 4 PM. Earlier that day, Watson will participate in a graduate student discussion in the Roon Foundation Conference Room, Beckman Center 5S, at 2 PM, and a research associate discussion in the Roon Foundation Conference Room, 2:55 PM.


Learn How to Make Charts in Excel

Have you had trouble creating charts in Excel? Do your pie charts come out as a blob of color with no sections? Did you know you can make Gantt charts using Excel? If you would like to know more about creating charts with Excel, sign up for the Excel Chart class scheduled for Tuesday, March 13, from 8:30 to 11 AM. In addition to working with modifying and formatting chart elements, the class will cover incorporating the drawing tools in a chart, building a "thermometer" chart and a Gantt chart (used to provide visual timelines for projects). Other topics will include setting your home page, organizing your toolbars, and finding previously visited sites using the history feature. Lunch and Learn: "Safeguarding Your Legal Interests"

Anthony Vallaadolid, the directing attorney for the University of California, San Diego will present "Safeguarding Your Legal Interests" as part of the Lunch and Learn seminar series. The event will take place on Wednesday, March 14, from noon to 1 PM, in the W.M. Keck Amphitheater in the Beckman Center for Chemical Sciences. The seminar will cover a general overview of the legal system, self-representation in administrative and judicial hearings, and protection of legal interests with or without a lawyer. TB Screenings, Hepatitis B Immunizations, and Serum Draws

On Monday March 19, Wednesday March 21, and Friday March 23, personnel from Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group will be on-site to conduct TB screenings, Hepatitis B immunizations, and serum draws. The clinics will be conducted at the Administrative Offices (3301 North Torrey Pines Court) on the P1 level from 11 AM to 2 PM. No appointments are necessary.
TB screening requires a 48 to 72 hour follow-up. Individuals receiving the TB screen on Monday will need to return on Wednesday; individuals screened on Wednesday, will need to return on Friday. Initiation of the TB screening process will not be available on Friday, but Hepatitis B immunization and serum draws will be.
