Scripps Research Institute's Dr. Charles G. Cochrane to Lecture on a New Therapy to Save Lives of Infants with Lung Disease

Lecture and Reception at 2 PM This Sunday at The Estancia La Hotel in La Jolla

LA JOLLA, CA, February 27, 2006 -- The Scripps Research Institute will present a lecture by Charles G. Cochrane, M.D., Professor Emeritus in the Institute's Department of Immunology, this Sunday, March 5 at 2 p.m. at The Estancia La Jolla Hotel and Spa.

Dr. Cochrane's lecture, part of the Frontiers in Science series, is titled "Creating Miracles-a Pioneering New Therapy to Save the Lives oflnfants with Deadly Lung Disease."

One of a small group of pioneering scientists who founded The Scripps Research Institute as a department of pathology in 1961, Dr. Cochrane served as Professor oflmmunology at Scripps Research in La Jolla, until 2005.

During that time, he conducted research that led to the synthesis of life-saving pulmonary surfactant - the crowning achievement of a distinguished career devoted to medical science. Available under the name Surfaxin, the drug gives doctors everywhere an effective, affordable tool for saving the lives of premature babies afflicted with acute respiratory distress syndrome, an otherwise potentially fatal condition, as well as adults affected with a lethal, active lung injury.

Dr. Cochrane received the Centennial "Live and Breathe" Award from The American Lung Association in 2004.

The lecture and a reception will be held in the Learning Center of The Estancia La Jolla Hotel, located at 9700 North Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla.
