The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology
The Skaggs Training Program
Fellowships and Supplements for Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellows of
The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology
Aline and Sam Skaggs established The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in 1996 in order to relieve human suffering by seeking out cures for diseases. Realizing this goal is the aim of the Institute.
The Skaggs Institute also seeks to provide a training environment for the next generation of research scientists. In addition to its contributions toward improving human health, the ultimate identity of The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology will be that of the scientists it produces, and in order to better leverage this future, the Institute has established the Skaggs Predoctoral Fellows Program and the Skaggs Postdoctoral Fellows Program.
The Programs
The Skaggs Fellowships were created to grant financial support and further the careers of young men and women at TSRI and provide tomorrow's leaders in drug development. United States citizenship is not a requirement for either program. Awards will be given to the best and brightest students who show outstanding promise in chemical biology research as it relates to human health.
Skaggs Predoctoral Fellows candidates must be graduate students currently enrolled in the Chemistry or Macromolecular and Cellular Biology and Chemistry Ph.D. programs at TSRI. Candidates are nominated by Principal Investigators of the Skaggs Institute on the basis of their classroom and laboratory achievements. Potential candidates may not submit their own names for consideration.
A letter of nomination for candidacy should be addressed to The Skaggs fellowship committee and should outline the nominator's frank judgment of the candidate and his/her promise as a scientist. Final decisions will be subject to the approval of the Dean of the Graduate School.
Letters of nomination for candidacy must include the following information:
1) Nominee's full name;
2) Nominee's complete mailing address at the institute, email, fax, and phone number; and
3) His/her expected date of graduation.
Skaggs Postdoctoral Fellows candidates are those individuals throughout the world who hold, or are in the final stages of obtaining, the M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degrees and are seeking postdoctoral training at The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology. All such individuals are encouraged to apply for a fellowship. Applicants who have had one year's postdoctoral laboratory training or those with advanced postdoctoral training will also be considered.
Application to the Skaggs Postdoctoral Fellow Program is made directly to the members of the Skaggs Institute.
Application form in Abobe Acrobat format.
Application form in MS Word format.
Preliminary screening of applicants will be carried out by the principal investigators, and final decisions are made by the Skaggs Postdoctoral Fellowship Advisory Committee. Current principal investigators of the Skaggs Institute are listed below. Information regarding their research programs can be seen at their respective websites at
http://www.scripps.edu/research/.
Supplements
In addition to the Skaggs Fellowships described above, the Skaggs Institute will consider providing fellowship supplements. Graduate students and postdoctorals at Scripps who have other competitive fellowships may apply to Principal Investigators of the Skaggs Institute for these supplements. The number of supplements and the particular amounts supplemented are entirely at the discretion of the Principal Investigators.
